The AmoritesWikipedia (or Amurru) lived in what is now Syria and southern Iraq. HeshbonWikipedia was a city east of the Jordan River near modern-day Madaba, and according to the Bible seat of King Sihon. OgWikipedia was another king nearby: Talmudic tradition says he was a giant who picked up a mountain and tried to crush the Israelites with it, but God sent ants who dug away at it and saved the Israelites. This verse refers to two of the legendary victories of the Israelites in conquering their Middle East homeland.

On this side Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to declare this law, saying,

Moab was a mountainous kingdom on the east side of the Dead Sea. It was frequently at war with Israel, and archaeological evidence includes the Mesha SteleWikipedia erected around 840 BCE to commemorate a Moabite victory over the Israelites, and is one of the best pieces of evidence we have for the existence of the Biblical kingdom of Israel.

If this means that there will be 1000 times as many as there are now, according to numbers, there should be around 603 million male Israelites capable of bearing arms. According to the CIA World Factbook, there are ~1.5 million male "manpower fit for military service" as of 2012. Even if you include the female population able to join the military, they have since regressed.

Some translations use other terms such as leaders or commanders (and the Hebrew uses a slightly different word for the smaller groups), but the Young Literal Translation calls them princes.[1]

Mount SeirWikipedia is a range of hills running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea. So (for once) the geography sort of makes sense.

Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

Esau was the brother of Jacob; they squabbled a lot and Esau went to live with the Ishmaelites in the mountains of Seir. But apparently God still has a certain fondness for Esau's descendents.

Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

God says you cannot kill these people, or take their land. Seemingly a first for the Almighty.

Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

We now have three different terms for these giants, though this one is the coolest.

A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead:

This is one of the Bible verses people reference to support the myth that giants once existed on Earth. This belief is widespread in the folktales of humanity, and may suggest a primordial, Paleolithic origin for such myths.

Here you can see the same thing that was previously saw in Exodus 4:21 and in all the Book of Exodus: God hardens Sihon's heart so the Israelites can make war against him. Just how He did with the Pharaoh in order to cast the plagues on the Egyptians.

And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

Yep, you read that right. Apparently discrimination isn't one of God's vices. Kill everyone equally, regardless of their age or gender, even the children. Clearly God is the source of all that is moral.

This verse demonstrates that the authors of Deuteronomy, as those of Genesis, thought that the Earth was flat, specifically, a flat surface surrounded by a glass dome (a.k.a., the firmament) that had holes in it that let water pour into the "interior" of the dome, thus "explaining" rain. There are no ends of the Earth, saying that there are "ends of the Earth" is like saying something is "North of the North Pole", it's wrong. Funny how a supposedly omniscient god would only have knowledge that reflects the knowledge of Iron Age goat-herders rather than the truly accurate knowledge we have now.

One would think this meant that women should therefore not wear pants, and Scotsmen should therefore not wear kilts. However, there are no specific details regarding "that which parteith of a man" or "that which parteith of a woman," so logically it is cultural. Therefore, pants are OK for women now since they are now both "that which parteith of a man" and "that which parteith of a woman". Same goes for kilts. Alternatively, one could interpret it as that neither gender could wear either since they are associated with the opposite and not just the individuals. So in other words Deuteronomy is very confusing when it comes to unisex garments.

This verse is problematic, and it's a result of tampering by a later editor.
Firstly, this verse breaks the style seen throughout the entire poem; a pattern of AA'BB'. For example, in v. 2:

and as the showers upon the grass

Doctrine as rain; speech as dew. Rain upon herb; showers upon grass. This style of parallelism is broken in v. 43. The first and second line are very different concepts. What's more, the parallelism is seen instead in the middle two lines. 43's pattern could be seen as A'BB'C', with some lyrics missing.

Another problem is it's absurdity. Read as is, the verse calls for the same nations being vengefully destroyed to rejoice for Israel.

Luckily, the missing parts have been preserved through the Septuagint[11] and Dead Sea Scrolls[12]. With these, a reconstruction can be made:

This and the final few verses are remarkable when accepting the traditional claim that Moses is the author of Deuteronomy. Apologists tend to argue that Moses wrote everything prior to his death, with someone else filling in the bits that followed his death. It's probably best that someone else finished the book. One can only imagine Moses' mood on finding out that he can see the promised land but shall never set foot on it.

Moses living to 120 years old is technically possible, since the oldest known person in history lived to the ripe old age of 122 years old.

Well, other than Micaiah (1 Kings 22:19), Job (Job 42:5), David (Psalm 63:2), Isaiah (Isaiah 6:1-2), Ezekiel (Ezekiel 1:27-28), and Amos (Amos 7:7, Amos 9:1). But apart from them, and Jesus who was kind of on the next step up due to being God and all, nobody did. It's also questionable what "face to face" means since while in Exodus 33:11 the two speak "face to face", in Exodus 33:20 God tells Moses that he can't show him his actual face.
