Maybe a 404 server block?[edit]

For hajl.cheefmsn.com? Check with tmt or Linus. CЯacke® 18:55, 8 September 2007 (CDT)

(moved, talk not user!) Maybe (and what is it, again?), but how, etc.? Aren't they using proxy IPs?

Recent deletions[edit]

Regarding Bad Religion and both Blues pages, you still have to delete the talk pages. ThunderkatzHo! 16:06, 9 September 2007 (CDT)

Oh crap, thanks. I thought talk died on its own when the article was axed. humanbe in 16:13, 9 September 2007 (CDT)

Stalker![edit]

Huh? humanbe in 18:24, 9 September 2007 (CDT)

Every time I turn around; there's HUMAN folllowing, correcting my attroshus spelin (which gets worse the older I get - I used to pride myself on spelling correctly!) ;-) .. 18:31, 9 September 2007 (CDT)

How else? ;) Now go write what social stuff PKD was addressing like you did orwell and bradbury. Please. humanbe in 19:58, 9 September 2007 (CDT)

PKD needs an article to himself. (z.b. - German zum beispiel: for example.) .. 20:08, 9 September 2007 (CDT)

Before you ax me to write pkd - I'm not actually a great fan of his writing but admire his imagination (he was legally insane from time to time). Anyhow I'm multitasking: rewriting epic on desktop; watching BBC News 24; pda-ing RW & ironing clothes (helps me think). SJGsjg 20:38, 9 September 2007 (CDT)
OK, One. No one else knows what "zb" means, can you use e.g. or cf.? Two, the reason I whined about PKD was that you described in a nutshell the social aspects of other writers, and just mentioned PKD without a similar "encapsulation", which he surely deserves. Three, multitasking, Schmultitasking! Get to work! humanbe in 23:40, 9 September 2007 (CDT)
Thank of the PKD attempt. Write his article? humanbe in 23:46, 9 September 2007 (CDT)

Is it bust on your end too? -- מְתֻרְגְּמָן וִיקִי שְׁלֹום!

If I knew what it was, I'd answer! What is it? Oh, wait, I figured it out, you mean the junk under the edit box. It's whacked here too. More backend work for T, I guess... humanbe in 16:04, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
I think that there's some way of editing it, at least to remove the ugly functionless tags, but it's late and I'm tired. 'night. -- מְתֻרְגְּמָן וִיקִי שְׁלֹום!
I think the issue is a bunch of stuff needs to be installed - remember back on 2.0 when we got hebrew and greek? Ironically, your sig works, so surely the "characters" are here. Anyway, I emailed Trent about it. I think we'll be cleaning up glitched for a few days. Why not revel in MATH instead? That works now at least! humanbe in 16:12, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
I took the awesome precaution of using unicode. It reaches deep into the soul of your computer to generate itself. I could revel in algorithmic maths, I suppose, but who wants to read, like, a gigabillion (1 024 000 000) pages of recurrent loops? -- מְתֻרְגְּמָן וִיקִי שְׁלֹום!
I mean math as in (or something like that). I forgot all the markup I learned at CP. humanbe in 16:23, 11 September 2007 (MDT)

eπi + 1 = 0
Haha, I had tried to make it huge too but it wouldn't work :(. Originally you were going to have some sweet massive Euler's rule pwnage on this page instead of a (comparatively) lame woohoo box.--Bayesupdate 22:14, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
Yea, keep in mind "math" passes the code onto a program that converts it into an image and passes the image back. You can't manipulate the "image" through wiki code. Its a parser. tmtoulouse nettle 22:19, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
Found another way! Though doing this with the Schrodinger eqn. would be considerable harder...--Bayesupdate 22:31, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
Well, yeah, but we could always do it that way :( Try doing it with a radical or any other "math" symbol... Still, looks good! (I made it fit my screen) 12:12, 12 September 2007 (MDT)

Why changing the name of ACD will suck[edit]

While its easy to change ACD to what ever you want, and it will automatically show up on articles in that namespace...it will not change the text of wikilinks...so every "fun:x" link will no longer work and have to be changed. tmtoulouse nettle 17:16, 11 September 2007 (MDT)

Ugh.... not worth the trouble in my opinion. Locke User is Vandal/sysop Always Watching...... 17:19, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
P.s. blocking still works.
Sure does. I blocked you for laziness for 3 gigacenturies. humanbe in 17:23, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
Yes, I know, the work will be brutal. It will have to be done by several editors, working together, step by step.
  1. Create "Fun:"
  2. Massive moving of ACD articles - or deletion of the really dumb ones
  3. Copious linkchecking and changing
  4. Deletion of ACD/talk redirects
  5. Checking "wanted pages" for missed links
  6. Finally, deleting "fun:" as a category.
I think we can amass the personpower, as it is a worthwhile goal. After" RW 2.1 is stablized, though.
Are you saying that the article names themselves could be auto-changed? If so, all we have to do is hunt down the links, and "wanted pages" makes that moderately easy. In which case, what are we waiting for? humanbe in 17:21, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
Yes the article names themselves will be changed automatically. tmtoulouse nettle 17:24, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
So all I'll have to do is fix a few "help" pages and replace "ACD" with "fun" a couple hundred times? Child's play... too bad we don't have any children here. By the way, the reason is twofold: to get rid of a old in-joke on CP, and to make it less of a "banishment" when we move people's opuses there. It will still have the same category number, right? I'm ready anytime... I think... humanbe in 17:27, 11 September 2007 (MDT)
FYI, the Project Whitwash page still references ACD in the Namespace Clean-up section.--Remarcsd 08:03, 14 September 2007 (MDT)
Thanks, fixed it, and RW:namespace. humanbe in 12:22, 14 September 2007 (MDT)

Note, this discussion is moot, since we done did it. And the "bot" tmt made has even altered the text above, so don't try to follow the logical steps as they aren't anymore. humanbe in 15:21, 16 September 2007 (EDT)

Janitor Duties[edit]

It's not often that I volunteer for cleaning duty but I appear to be on a different time zone from many of the admins around here and have tried cleaning up some vandal attacks and feel a demotion to the janitor roster my help with some of the spam attacks. Genghis Khan 06:53, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

Speaking as a member of the mob I would support this move. --Bob's your uncle 06:57, 13 September 2007 (MDT)
Can't disagree - but -'til we get our domain name sorted - low spam? Anyroad up in't it a rule that "asking for demotion is disqualification for demotion"? Seriously though - time served etc. - no objections. SJGAnother day, another dollar! 07:19, 13 September 2007 (MDT)
And time served dates back through some earlier (shhhhh!) accounts which were respected, too. I'll go push the buttons and see what happens. humanbe in 12:27, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

I don't actually see the problem with all established editors being demoted to sysop. Why is there a prejudice (?) in favour of a high editor:sysop ratio? SJG... fly up your nose. 22:00, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

I don't either. I just haven't figured out a way to codify what "established" (or "trusted", etc.) means in this context. There's also no point in making people sysops who don't want to be. Our active editor to sysop ratio is about 2:1, isn't it? What was the question, again? humanbe in 23:16, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

Redlinks, watchlist, etc.[edit]

I can't see what you're talking about, sorry bud. Is there something you needed me to fix?-αmεσ (!) 09:14, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

Hi Ames. We're on a bit of a red-link purge at the moment. Trying to radically reduce the number. One article which comes up a lot when we're chasing reds is Essay:Atheism/torefute which may be one of the ones Human was on about. I've hit on it several times.--Bob's your uncle 09:35, 13 September 2007 (MDT)
Yup, that's it. We accidentally do this when we port over exact copies from CP to refute - all their links remain in the copy, and many will never exist here. It's a pain, but removing them makes our "wanted pages" list make more sense. As if anything here made sense... humanbe in 12:23, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

Fora[edit]

The new improved forum won't let me. CЯacke® 17:14, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

Damn, I wish I knew how to help ya. Can't log in? A few people have reported difficulties with it, but you'll need Tmt or Linus (if T gave him the poword) to help you out. I doubt I can get anywhere useful through the admin panel thing. Were you using one of the "custom" skins for it? humanbe in 17:17, 13 September 2007 (MDT)
I'm not sure, but I suspect part of the problem is that when you log in, you're directed to the forum under the domain name, and until it's fully propagated, then you'll keep ending up at the "deleted account" page. --Kels 17:18, 13 September 2007 (MDT)
I think Kels is probably right. Does RW.com work for you yet? humanbe in 17:21, 13 September 2007 (MDT)
Shows up as http://rationalwiki.com/~rationa4/index.php?title=Main_Page. I tried rw.com and got something completely different, and not the way (MPFC) I like. CЯacke® 18:17, 13 September 2007 (MDT)
Sorry, I was just abbreviating. Well, someone bugged Tmt, I saw, so maybe answers will be forthcoming there? humanbe in 18:20, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

Fora don't work for me either - and it appears to not just be ISPs. In a confounding state of affairs, AT&Ts wireless EDGE network allows me access the fora from a Starbucks three blocks north of my Manhattan apartment, but on the same ISP in my apartment, no joy. And Time Warner Cable still thinks it doesn't exist.-αmεσ (!) 18:23, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

Bummer. I really can't help (that I know of) except to be sympathetic, but Trent has been alerted. I'd follow this on his talk page if I were youze. humanbe in 18:30, 13 September 2007 (MDT)

wiki link[edit]

The Eugenics article contains a box with a link to the Wiki artile of the same name. The box contains the text, 'For those who seek a broader, less biased article, ...' Do we really want this wording? Wouldn't it be better to say something along the lines of 'For a broader and more in depth look at this subject, ...' :--Remarcsd 20:28, 17 September 2007 (EDT)

Good point, but the word is intentional. We are biased, they have NPOV. Of course, even the need for that template is a bit weak. Of course, I also hold that "everyone" knows about wikipedia, and we don't ever need to link there. Copying a word or phrase into their search box is easy enough. IMHO, anyway. That's why I hate it when people bluelink using "wp:" in an article text - it might make it look like we have an article (that maybe we should have). Anyway, that's more on the topic than you asked for. How about we change the template to read "For a "neutral point of view" article on..."? Is that better? humanbe in 20:36, 17 September 2007 (EDT)
Fine by me, but don't change it on my account, I raised the matter only because I didn't want to be the work of a subtle CP type wandal, do conservatives wandalise? can conservatives be subtle? Its an interesting question you raise about wiki links. I use them sparingly, usually when it is pointless to produce an article that will essentially match theirs, particularly on big ticket subjects.:--Remarcsd 23:52, 17 September 2007 (EDT)

You know, this is why I like this site. Whether or not I was being a jackass, it's cool to call anyone on such behavior, or at least ask them if something is getting their goat. And we don't delete, we take it seriously, and, hey, in the end, we're all friends and a "reality check" might just stop us from gittin' really stoopid. humanbe in 23:59, 22 September 2007 (EDT)

You've got mail[edit]

Yes, I do. Not acquiesce to marry you, but I do have mail. humanbe in 00:00, 23 September 2007 (EDT)

Speaking of transitional forms .....[edit]

Unless I'm completely imagining this, I recall that for a short while recently the "history" tab on this wiki was labeled "transitional forms". OK, that may be confusing, but could it be changed to "history / transitional forms"? And, better still, could "edit" be changed to "edit / evolve"? Gauss 17:35, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

We could do "anything", but remember two things - one is that new users need to know what the hell the tabs do, and the tabs have to fit across the screen. I see someone did the edit/evolve thing. Eh. I hate lock'n'block, it's just not clear. Vaporize and relocate methinks is funny. I also want discussion to be labelled "talk", since that's what we call it. Random opinions... humanbe in 18:10, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
I pressed the 'evolve' button, but I didn't develop any super-powers. Should I file a bug report? --AKjeldsenGodspeed! 18:52, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
Of course not! You'd need to be intelligently designed to get super-powers. Gauss 19:38, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
God, can we please ax lock'n block? Locke User is Vandal/sysop Always Watching...... 18:57, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
Sure, but what do we want? "lock"? "Locke"?! "protect" again? "condom"? "insulate"? Hahahahaha... humanbe in 19:09, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
Anything is better than what it was. Locke User is Vandal/sysop Always Watching...... 19:11, 20 September 2007 (EDT)
I left it at "lock" for now. When we get sick of the silliness we can always go "OEM" again. humanbe in 19:14, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

Being clear, especially for newbies, is more important than clever jokes, so we should always have the "traditional" term up there on the tab. I really like "edit/evolve". And I don't see any "lock/block" stuff. I guess I'm just a transitional form. :-) Gauss 19:38, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

I agree. Whatever fun we have with them, they have to make sense to newcomers instantly. I had already changed "lock/block" to "lock" by the time you looked, probably. I'm not thrilled with edit/evolve, it seems clumsy, but at least it's clear to outside wikiers. My change of "discussion" to "talk" seems to have propagated, I figure, heck, even WP calls it the talk page, why have the tab say discussion? Vaporize and relocate are a bit funky, but they also shouldn't be played with by newcomers. Although relocate could be better. I like "rename", since that's what it does. humanbe in 19:44, 20 September 2007 (EDT)

Reverts and log-in expiry[edit]

You reverted some edits by anonymous user 203.214.92.9 a short time ago. That anonymous user was me not realising my log-in had expired. Is this expiry time a feature of the wiki software or something my end? If the former is it psooible to have the time extended? I can be away from my computer for varying periods throughout the day and logging back in can be tedious. As to the edits themselves. I hummed and hahed over them and eventually decided that, particularly in the case of the Pentagon, they were not high priority articles that advance the RW raison d'etre therefore a wiki link was preferrable to a redlink as it conveyed the relevant information in a way we were probably be happy with. YMMV:--Remarcsd 19:56, 23 September 2007 (EDT)

When you log in, check off the box that says "remember me on this computer", and you shouldn't ever time out (I stay logged in for weeks at a time...). My only issue with "in line" wp: type links is they make it look like we have the article. Anywize, I writted a snartikle for pentagon. What was the other one, Earl Warren? I figure it'll get written, considering the amount of US Law stuff we have. Good luck with that check box, it should work for you. humanbe in 20:01, 23 September 2007 (EDT)
Thanks for the tip; would wp: links be more acceptable if we left them in their pure form so that the "wp:" appeard each time, or is a reference link preferrable?:--Remarcsd 20:07, 23 September 2007 (EDT)
YW. Well, keep in mind that we don't all agree about this wp thing ;). Personally, as long as they don't replace a red link we should write, and people can tell it's wp, I don't mind them. But still, I don't really see the point. Everyone knows wp exists and has articles, and can copy/paste a word or phrase into the wp search box. So to answer you, sort of, I'd rather see them as references or in an external link section. But I'm sure there are others who will think otherwise. humanbe in 20:31, 23 September 2007 (EDT)

Awesome, and thanks for the links, I should go there... meantime, I think your "joke" could find a great home on RW - just not on the main page... humanbe in 01:25, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

picture uploads[edit]

I have just uploaded a figure for the relativity article. Having a hard time; text doesn't show. So I've made sort of a mess (4 files!), and it looks as though only sysops can delete images. Please bear with me. I'll give you the full list of things to delete once I figure out what's going on. Gauss 23:08, 28 September 2007 (EDT)

Cool, just list 'em here when the time comes. And thanks for your awesome work on that article. humanbe in 01:23, 29 September 2007 (EDT)

While I'm at it, maybe I should shrink the pies down as well, so thumbing doesn't mess up the words. Is there another format that'll scale better (png?) VirileSterilepie chart? 14:04, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

Well, svg scales "perfectly". You can make them in inkscape. The trouble with thumbs is that there's no way of knowing what someone might have their prefs set to (I think you can reset the default thumb size). Another way to go is to keep the text out of the image and put it in the "comment" (ie, red = so and so, blue = so and so, etc.). Also indicate who the colors are in the image file so it doesn't get lost. In fact, the timelines could go like that too - just put the "to" and "from" dates in the image file, and in text underneath them. What do you think? humanbe in 15:16, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

Jeb[edit]

Sorry, I blocked him last night for, well a long time, and Cracker revised it to a month. He's leaving tons of dropping everywhere, and it's hard to clean up after him. Lots of links, etc. Feel free to revert anything ive done and punish me. --PalMD-Oy, mein tukhas! 18:59, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

Blocking does not slow him down, he just uses IPs to keep making a mess. Better to have him log in and try to get him to be funny and not just stupid. Think how ineffective CP blocks are when they are dealing with committed vandals. Our strategy here is to "engage" the vandal and try to shepherd them either "away" or into productive activity.
Personally, I find it easier to hit rollback than to also chase down some redlink IP talk page as well. humanbe in 19:02, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
OK, sounds like a plan. Someone will have have to unblock his primary acct. Ill do it. Darn. I hate freedom.--PalMD-Oy, mein tukhas! 19:03, 1 October 2007 (EDT)
Didn't I unblock his username and that weird "number" block both? humanbe in 19:06, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

Thought: would it be possible to block IPs from viewing special pages? Then they'd be a bit out of the loop. (Possibly not a good idea, thinking about it.) Susantalk to me 19:38, 1 October 2007 (EDT)

You deleted the Sherrod Degrippo article I created specifically to get rid of the red link until the Jeb Berkely situation is resolved. I googled SD and I am quite certain the Sd and JB are one and the same, wwich my VSA pointed out. Was there a particular reason for deleting it?:--Remarcsd 00:26, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

Klled it. It's junk. Is that ok? humanbe in 00:29, 2 October 2007 (EDT)
We don't need the crap file in the intermediate. SB, dea. Jeb whatsisface, kill it, delete it...
Fine by me, I was merely trying to subtly?? indicate it was junk AND get rid of a red link at the same time. I also felt it might niggle JB/SD which would have been worth it. YMMV:--Remarcsd 00:35, 2 October 2007 (EDT)
Feel free to mess with JB as much as you like. Sorry if I interfered. When JB turnd up here, we get to do a lot of reverting and shit. Any easying of the load is good... humanbe in 00:44, 2 October 2007 (EDT)

Do we have something like a "simple feeds" extension so that I could have a blog feed on my userpage? Eliminates you having to hunt for my recipes.162.82.215.199 20:09, 4 October 2007 (EDT)

Doc, you bum, in between stealing tourists' kidneys in hotels, you should post your recipes here! I think a title and a link to the blog posting in question would be fair and acceptable, of course. Gee, I wonder if I could engineer such a feat? humanbe in 01:57, 5 October 2007 (EDT)

Any of these on CP?

Doesn't seem like it to me, although that asscruft guy sounds like assfly to me. Nah, CP is its own moronic lump of innertube shit. Mostly, the heavy hitters there are innertube psychos who got banned from WP. The others, sadly, are deluded teenagers that Andy wants to fuck. Eventually.
