WWGHA[edit]
Quick question for you. Are you the Human who's been a regular on the WWGHA forums? --Ask me about your mother 22:37, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
- I doubt it, since I don't think I even know what they are. "Human" is taken at most established internet venues long before I get there anyway. I only use it here because in early '07 I didn't want to use my real name at CP, and then no one knew who the heck "Huw Powell" was on RW1, so I registered as Human on RW2 for simplicity. I am, or was, Human at CP, RWW, maybe WS, and aSK, I think that's about it. Oh, and on the RW forums. ħuman 22:41, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

- Cheers. My dad reads the Mail, which scares me, so I'm trying to find some comedy in that atrocity of a newspaper. I'm working on an article to describe WWGHA, so I'll collect together the most interesting links. --Ask me about your mother 07:42, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
- I added it as an external link at prayer, so that can get changed to a see also when the time comes. Let me know when you knock together the article! ħuman 18:36, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

I was reading through Opal Honor's talk page when I spotted this gem:
“”I think Huw has probably been on the BBC News at 10 before - "Welsh extradite Huw Powell has been involved in another attack on six children in his garden using for weapons a lawn mower, hedge trimmers and a 1970s era eight-track player, when a soccer ball landed twenty feet from his lawn. The resulting incident required twelve police cars, eight ambulances, and Alan Titchmarsh before the situation was resolved and the attacker placed under arrest. He has since broken out and is still at large."

Nearly as good as the first... favourite sketch, "The Society for Putting Things on Top of Other Things."

- Hehe, yes... I never regretted dropping over $100 on the box set of all the shows. Well, not after I had a friend "refactor" them to simplify the awful menu/intro crap that the geeks at A&E make you watch before every episode, anyway. It's also nice to have a copy of All the Words to go with it. ħuman 20:27, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Prodigal Editor[edit]
What on earth has been going on for the last year? Give me a carefully itemised list of the haps. Oh, and, hi! --מְתֻרְגְּמָן וִיקִי שְׁלֹום!
- We had a 14-year-old cheetah visit and leave. We added eleven articles to the mainspace and fixed 314 typos in what we already had.
Kels and Doc ran off to BermudaSusan burned through five or six computers, compelling her to rewrite all the help files so they work best on a cell phone screen. After Marcus Cicero made a few suggestions, we instituted a new, much stricter set of guidelines that forbid something called "4chan internet memes" or something, although nothing much changed. Trent went home for two weeks and the server promptly crashed, leaving us RW-less for the duration. We descended on BobM's teflonwwiki and used all his monthly bandwidth in about three days. Nx and Pi keep making the various Web 2.0 custom user interfaces more and more sophisticated and cool. So, anyway, how have you been, it's nice to see you back - thanks for dropping in to say hi! ħuman 21:59, 31 October 2009 (UTC)- Cool, so not that different from how it was before. Anyway, I'm at Oxford now, where, as I'm studying History and Politics, I've theoretically got a lot of free time to come and bother you lot (although actually, that's evil deceit propagated by the tutors, as I've spend roughly half of my life reading). So, fun. Is PalMD still around? I've still got to thank him for getting me hooked on the scientific method and causality and stuff, which really helped. But yeah, you're all awesome, and a good antidote to me getting depressed at other people on the internet. --מְתֻרְגְּמָן וִיקִי שְׁלֹום!
- Doc pops in once in a while, but I think most of his internet energies are devoted to his blog these days. And of course, he is a busy doctor and young father. But I see edits by him at least once a month, it seems. ħuman 23:06, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Bases and balls[edit]
I forgot to ask, what is your team? I knew you were rooting against the Yanks, but that doesn't narrow it down much. Tetronian you're clueless 04:57, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- Hehe, no it doesn't, does it. I also had to learn the players on the Phil team over a few games (although Utley and Lee were easy to pick out). I live in NH, so I guess I pretend to loves me some Red Socks. Really, when I watch good sports, when I don't know the teams, my allegiance switches endlessly to whoever is behind ;). But it was fun watching so many Yankees I remember from 2004 still doing what they do. And I'm happy for your rooting for your team, and hell, after all these years and all that cash, surely Yankees deserve to buy one again. My favorite Yankee? Jeter, for his smirk. Yankees, I'd swear, have to turn up to spring training in suits. No personality allowed. But Jeter's smirk - and I mean that in the best way - says "Hey, I may be in pinstripes, but I'm a worker". Or something like that. Anyway, congrats to your team for winning, I had hope to see it go seven, but I did expect the slightly tighter (and better bullpenned) Yanks to win in the end. "World" champions? Why do they always embarrass our sport before the world that way? ħuman 05:04, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- PS, do you mind if I archive that SB thread to save space? ħuman 05:05, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- Sure, archive away.
- They call it "world" series because it includes the US and one team from Canada, which is more than any other US sport does. I agree, Jeter is my favorite Yankee, with Posada a close second. I can't stand A-Rod, he gets paid way too much for doing nothing. I live in NJ, which is mostly Yank territory, although we have a bunch of Mets fans mixed in. I was actually a bit surprised at the result, based on how Philly did last year I expected it would be a much closer series than it was. Tetronian you're clueless 05:11, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- A-rod pissed me off 5 years ago when he slapped the ball out of some Sox pitcher's glove. I think he's overrated. I think most of the Yankees are amazing players, and they were overdeserved for winning this one (although I would have liked it go seven!) That starter tonight, bunch of t's and l's, great pitcher. Their closer, amazing - why isn't he ever in consideration for starter? End of story, yes, the big brains expected it to go seven, but the Yankees had a tighter team, the Phillies were always a bit loose - bot never so loose as to be "a bunch of idiots." I'll archive the SB part of this convo, if you want to continue to chat rounders here, feel free. ħuman 05:26, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
Religious Right[edit]
Because it is a social movement, it is often capitalized, much like the Civil Rights Movement. That's why I had capitalized both words back in the day, and I think it should probably be capitalized. Of course, one could argue there are, in fact, many different movements called "the Religious Right," but the seeming unity is enough, I believe, to capitalize it. I had to dig out my copy to check the spelling: It was one of the books that was flooded in 2007 and all the pages were stuck together. I've not repaired it fully and all the pages are now loose. It's an excellent book when you can manage to go through the lot. Might re-buy it. & marmitechat 01:30, 5 November 2009 (UTC)

Minn. Matters[edit]
Here's the show. I'm not sure where to listen for your Andy clone. Are you sure he sounded like a Muppet gargling diarrhea? 01:46, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- I heard it. The one where one host comments "how much of that was nonsense?" That was "Stan" from somewhere in MN. I think Andy likes using his own name for its cache if nothing else. 01:57, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- Here is roughly where it is in the mp3. He sounds like Andy - I loved the, "oh, I'll wait until after the break" part. No you won't! Not sure what he actually had to say though. ħuman 02:57, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- He really did sound like a weasel choking on his own razor blade vomit. He also sounded incredibly confused about why he was calling. ħuman 04:58, 5 November 2009 (UTC)
- Why are you guys listening to Minnesota Matters, anyway? If anything, I'd think only ListenerX or myself would care about that show. Punky Your mental puke relief 20:12, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Good evening citizen. You have been selected for showing interest in your local Mei. Were you aware that you can show your support for the troops the Mei by sporting this userbox on your userpage? It's very pretty. This Christmas Mei will go hungry. Please help feed a hungry Mei today. - (EC) The capitalization in the present titles is incorrect. One does not use sentence case for proper nouns. The previous capitalization is necessary. (And, as Mei says, I was merely restoring a state of affairs that existed prior to my joining the Wiki.) ListenerXTalkerX 05:19, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

There was no width parameter[edit]
There is no width parameter and there will be no width parameter. It was done via your monobook.css -- Nx / talk 04:30, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- "And there will be no..." Wow. Your fanatical authoritarianism is freaking me out. ħuman 04:32, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- You edited my user space without permission to mess with how I see the site? That is NOT COOL. You need to SLOW THE FUCK DOWN and see if other people want the changes you are implementing sitewide. I suggest bringing it up on the saloon bar. ħuman 04:38, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- You wanted it to be maximized at 800 pixels no? -- Nx / talk 04:42, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, but not just "for me", but for "anyone". Also, that was a very clumsy way of communicating, since I didn't know why what I was was looking at looked the way it did. I think you should simply implement a "max width" parameter so it can be tailored to individual templates. Also, I don't see any value in what you are doing, every new message box type template will require editing template:messagebox to include its specific parameters. One stop shopping is better than having to edit several files, I think. Anyway, so far, this is your one-man mission, no one else has "asked" for this extra level of complexity to our templates. And you haven't asked anyone else if it seems like a good idea. ħuman 04:47, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- No you don't, you edit the common.css to add an extra class. That way you don't jam the server with a huge job queue. - π 04:52, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

- You wanted it to be maximized at 800 pixels no? -- Nx / talk 04:42, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
Why this is a good idea:
- From a technical viewpoint:
- In the past, when you wanted to create something you found something similar and copied it, changed it a bit and called it a day. You then had lots of copies of the same code with slight changes and then I have to fix the fucking things when someone fucks up and the fuckup proliferates because of this copying. Example: The right side navigation templates (that's the next one-man project btw), userboxes after the MW upgrade.
- From a stylistic viewpoint:
- We don't look like a geocities site.
Why it's a one-man crusade:
- Because no-one cares.
Why no-one asked me to do this:
- Because no-one cares. Or worse, thinks that what we have now is perfect and should stay. -- Nx / talk 05:01, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- Human, I think the important thing to remember is we are about to have a major shift in the appearance and functionality of MediaWiki. Things like the CSS are going to effect the on screen appearance a lot more than old html code. Have you been trying Wikipedia beta? - π 05:06, 20 November 2009 (UTC)
- I don't like this wiki any more. People think they can not only change things without ANY discussion aforehand, they also feel comfortable EDITING MY USER SPACE TO FUCK WITH HOW THE WIKI LOOKS. You guys can fuck off, kindly. Nx is an asshole who does not know how to work with a community. He is an authoritarian bastard "I've been thinking about this a lot and I honestly think this is the best solution, even if it's not perfect." - Nx. ħuman 05:11, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

- US TVs are all NTSC, as far as I know. Also, I'd need a region-free (or all regions) player. Or I'd need a way to "double hack" the dvds - strip the region code, then convert PAL to NTSC (which from what I found on line is rather complex). Whereas there are machines like this which would solve the whole problem. ħuman 23:12, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Deletion and Revert[edit]
May I inquire as to why you deleted Economics, when it was clearly a work in progress going from an unnecessary list to an actual article? Also, your revert on J. Edgar Hoover changes a stub to a sub-stub with no purpose whatsoever.
You may think that Economics sucks, but Hazillow and I had started rewriting it about seven hours ago. Ugh. The Wine of TyrantsDrunk with power again!
- I didn't, apparently, "delete" Economics. I just suggested that it should be deleted. Why? Because it was lame and showed no tendency to be "on mission". Your other link tells me nothing - it's just a link to an article. Please use to learn diff links on wikis? ħuman 07:09, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

It's because this site now prefers trolls to regular users. It's just not fun anymore, when you have to see the same trolling shit day in and day out. I'm tending to agree with Jeeves, and Toast, and Kels. I log into RW, and I don't really see anything I wish to do here at this point. I don't find constant block wars all that interesting (there's a difference between a love block and what's going on) and it's becoming rather high school-ish. Just not all that interesting really. Sterile minefield 15:10, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- So perhaps there is a solution: ignore the trolls and the anti-troll trolls and just get on with writing the wiki. Tetronian you're clueless 15:17, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- Well duh. The problem is, however, that there is no wiki to write. You harp on about rationalwiki being a project but you've only been here a few months. You really don't understand that what gets most RWians up in the morning is their bigotry; RW is a conduit through which that bigotry passes, no more, no less. The reason they are all so pissed at me is that I reflect that fact in a very literal way.
- That's the solution I was hoping for, but apparently it's impractical. People here can't ignore trolls. — Sincerely, Neveruse513 / Talk / Block 15:22, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- (EC)That only works if everyone is on board with it. But as we've seen, over and over and tediously over again, from TK forward, is that isn't working. I rarely responded at all to him, and a number of others didn't either, but a lot of people just couldn't help themselves. You can't have any expectation on this wiki that enough people will honour DNFTT for it to prevent Recent Changes and a lot of popular pages being filled up with drama. --Kels (talk) 15:23, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- If people can't ignore trolls, that's their problem. What really pisses me off about the current situation is that it's by and large the people who can't ignore trolls than then turn on their fellow RW-ians and start swearing at them. –SuspectedReplicantretire me 15:37, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

- The fact of the matter is that if there were more interesting things to do on RW, the MC drama would take a back seat. What people are really annoyed by is the fact that you've all run out of ideas. Face it; the principle of writing a wiki (Which by your own admission is not intended as being serious) doesn't motivate anyone; the social group thing works for a while, but people on the internet grow tired of other anonymous peoples company; and therefore, a pariah figure is necessary both as an excuse to complain and threaten reprisals, but also as an excuse to leave if your dis-satisfied with the remainder of the wiki. Just bear in mind that all the recent histrionics were not started by me, but by yourselves. Anyone with even a basic knowledge of sociology will understand that this really is a case of 'making your own bed'.

Hyman in the Golden Sands[edit]
So what kind of psycho rat bastard would write the word "Hymen" in two foot high letters on the golden imported sands of Oriental Bay on a Sunday evening as the sun sets?
What kind of depraved lunatics could get away with flailing round in the surf, abusing the locals and terrifying small children; all the while drinking cheap champagne out of paper cups and smoking endless amounts of cigarettes?
"Dear God someone please take these helpless weirdo's to church and lock them in a confessional for 3 days, By Christ!" is what I want to scream at them.
Unfortunately all the evidence points unequivocally towards the real culprits. My entire weekend is held on a magnetic tape less than an inch wide and the bastard tells me no fucking lies.
But wait, is something missing here?
How did we get to the beach?
Why we were so powerfully twisted and why the hell did "Hymen" appeal to us so much?
All the answers arrived to me when I awoke from a kind of twilight conscious state late Sunday night. I was on the couch, my body racked by powerful DTs and even worse visual distortions. My dictaphone was lying by my side and I felt logical enough to understand its contents.
At least I thought I was.
Hours of gibberish. Much talk of pirates, birthday and a strange technique called "The Mastodon Formation", Black Sabbath, baying at the moon, dogs barking, loud dance music, people yelling "Slut" at strangers and my own personal commentary recorded whilst in the bathroom taking a piss.
It was all madness but it did have a logical order.
It appeared on Friday night I drunk a lot and went to town. I remember the Matterhorn and drinking whisky neat for a couple hours before being harassed by a jittery security guard after I fell down in a link-way somewhere, hovering above the street between a parking building and the footpath, and refused to stand up.
When I woke up on Saturday morning I was bruised and someone had tied me to the couch.
It was very odd but not altogether unexpected.
The real weekend gig was on the Saturday night and I was ready. I didn't know what to expect, there were many variables involved and it could have gone sour at any moment but I wanted to be there to wish my good friend a very happy birthday, get as drunk as I possibly could, jump behind the decks and spin some records.
Everything went without a hitch, a night of madness like no other. Thank Christ, I was prepared for trouble but I wanted to avoid it like a leper on heat.
I found the best option was to hibernate behind the decks with a dozen beer, a pack of smokes and some hard Swedish techno.
And boy was that a good option, I sat behind those bastards for 2 hours and played a set that even Jeff Mills himself would be proud of.
My tape goes a bit funny here, it seems I was wandering around telling people how good it was to finally meet them in person and could I ask them where they gained their influences?
"In what way did the trip to India influence their latest work?"
"Do you have any empirical evidence that the fairy queen is prettier than I am?"
"Who wants to come and be a fascist with me?"
"Everyone scream like a pirate!"
Painful gibberish flows from the dictaphone into my ear and I sway as I try to get up off the couch, just press play.......
Sunday morning, wake, dress, spend an hour on the phone trying to relegate the troops and get down to some more action. Head back to the party to find people up and about eating birthday cake. I take a large slice and pour myself a whisky in a tumbler with a dark beer on the side while I decline the offer of eggs on toast. I sit on the couch next to a trusted ally and get down to discussing the poo castle and how it relates to the "The Mastodon Formation".
When the rest of my group arrive we pile in cars and head down to the waterfront to check out "The Auto Salon" show.
A man in a car next to us screams into my dictaphone as we stop next to him. I roll down the window and reach out with it as far as I can and he says,
"Its Monday tomorrow and I'm not very happy about it!" he yells before winding his window up.
Before I can even contemplate a response we are moving again.
Park the car and head towards the show. By this stage I was really feeling loose in the head and it had begun to get worse. My associate and I keep fumbling and blabbering at strangers. Powerfully out of my head and getting more and more so as time went on.
"We need drinks, we must have booze!" I mutter while recoiling at the sound of my own grating voice.
"I know, we'll get some soon and head to the beach, check out the water" he replies as a strange glint lights up his eyes which goes a long way toward explaining the state of mental trouble he was having at the time. Lips pursed and voice hissing.
The car show was a complete waste of time. The cars were not really that nice and the stench of boy racers was making my head swim. So much so that I stumbled into the back of a girl then suddenly veered right and into a body builder whose forearms were thicker than my neck.
Or were they? My vision was fucking up and I couldn't tell my own body from the surroundings.
After the car show it was time to check out "Armageddon". The comic book and Star Trek show. I was very interested to see what these dateless wonders had to say and to get a quote from the special guest from Star Trek.
Unfortunately I didn't have the right credentials to get in for free and the cover charge would have left us no drinking money so we decided to split from our group and head to the beach to get liquored.
We were really gone by this point and as we passed the bustop we ran into friend who’s speech was so impeded he had to say everything twice. And well why not?
We decided he should join us as we went to the beach to spread the word..............
Stumble into my bedroom and fall on the bed, the tape has nearly run out now but as I fall unconscious again I hear the sounds of a scuffle from the tape, a dog starts barking, people are yelling and a voice in the background is screaming......

I was looking at your conversation with Philip over the sitenotice stuff, and it occurred to me something that got missed somewhere along the way. MEMO Happy New Year, Human. This is from Useful Mei. It is an appropriate time for festivities, like alcohol. Today try not to eat too much, or too little. |

Your number of edits[edit]

- I'm slowly crawling there, not as prolific as I used to be. Still at 496xx or so. Do blocks count as edits? If I blocked every sysop that would do it. But I'm not trying to game it, just watching and wondering what will happen. PS, editor #188 at Wp only has 30k WP edits. And the assfly is in a similar range over at CP. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? The "kan haz no leif" userbox is sounding more and more appealing every day... ħuman 08:42, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Europe[edit]
You ever notice how people try to sell dubious goods and services by calling them "European"? That's what I was going for. Feel free to add -- I don't think I really did justice to the subject. EVDebs (talk) 01:12, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

- Great business for the makers of adaptors between incompatible thread standards. I'm thinking of a quintessential middle-class public-school boy with delusions of twitdom who installed a chrome plated steam heated undie dryer in the bathroom of a house planted in the US. It took a stack of adaptors this long, and took him that long to acquire the bits for it. Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 14:16, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Exemption[edit]
You have earned an exemption from open hostilities in the RW/MC War of attrition. This isn't because of any real service to reason, but because you have an open mind, intolerant of authoritarianism. Signature[edit]
Hey, I've noticed lately that my signature isn't randomizing like it used to. Now, I just get the same note on every instance of the page when it loads... Did something change in the code that I don't know about? Thanks SirChuckBBATHE THE WHALES!!!! 21:25, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, it did. To save on server resources, Nx made it so a template only gets parsed once per page load, and our sigs are of course templates. To beat that, you put a pipe at the end as if there is a parameter coming:
- And it should work again. ħuman 21:31, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hmmmm, or not... I wonder if the help file explains it? ħuman 21:32, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- "Note that if you use random, you will have to change "Signature" in your preferences to include a pipe (|) before the closing brackets, like this: {{User:Yourname/sig|}" Do what I showed above but do it in your prefs. ħuman 21:34, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Got it just before I came back to read your response. Thanks again. SirChuckBCall the FBI 21:37, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Please change it back. Your sig now disables the parser cache on all pages that it appears on, slowing down the load. Professor Moriarty 21:44, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- No it doesn't. You're confusing two things:
- a) When you call a template without parameters, its results gets cached, so all calls to the same template on a single page will be the same. This is an optimization in MediaWiki. If there are parameters, this optimization is disabled, hence why you need to add the pipe. You need to add the pipe at every level, though it's no longer necessary to use the double template trick, you can just remove SUBST: from the nickname box in your preferences.
- b) random is cached, which means sigs will only change when you reparse a page.
- I fixed your sig by adding a pipe in User:SirChuckB/sig -- Nx / talk 22:14, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Oh ok, I see the what the problem is... So now all my signatures will be randomized, but the ones I signed before changing it are gonna stay the same. Is that right? SirChuckBOne of those deceitful Liberals Schlafly warned you about 22:20, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Nx: when I reloaded the page, some of the sigs changed, but that was probably just the cache being purged intermittently. Professor Moriarty 22:25, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- If you didn't have the pipe in preferences, then those will be the same because of the optimization.
- BTW, now you can see why template signatures are bad: editing the signature of a prominent member slows down the wiki significantly. -- Nx / talk 22:27, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, I understand now. I've got it, thanks. That's also why I try to avoid changing anything about my signature. SirChuckBA product of Affirmative Action 22:30, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Fucked up shit[edit]
Sometimes we are all so trivial, arguing about stuff that really doesn't matter, and then the shit hits the fan and real life intrudes. RA's parents are getting divorced, and he come here to look for some support, direction, love, even. Then fucking Goonie's sister gets raped and he has the stones to tell us what he's going through, and, again, look for a little support, direction, etc. It makes little edit wars, article deletions, etc. seem so meaningless when people in our community are dealing with seriously painful shit. I have no idea why I posted this... ħuman 01:48, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
- I know the feeling. Little bickerings about little matters mean nothing in the face of real life situations. I am glad that the our little community is tight enough for the most part that we can look to each other for guidance or a willing ear to listen, so to speak. Aboriginal Noise Punkrock 01:54, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
- I agree, it gives us a sense of perspective. Our wiki-troubles look patently absurd compared to our real-life ones. But - and maybe this is not the place for this odd brainwave - I wonder if, as future generations become more accustomed to the internet and online communities, internet troubles will seem as real as, well, real ones. Look, I'm all for respecting other people and treating them as equals, but that doesn't mean I invite every Tom, Dick and Terry into my house and treat him like family. - I'd much prefer that "controversial" actions, such as the demotion of characters with an unpleasant history be discussed, not arbitrarily done. It doesn't take much of an imagination or sense of empathy to realise that some decisions are best made after there's been a discussion. Referring back to the earlier section "Fucked up shit": we do get too tied up in things that are ultimately trivial in the grand scheme of things, but one aspect of considerate behaviour is to accept that little problems compound matters and risk being the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back. I'm not suggesting that we walk on egg shells everytime one of us is engulfed in tragedy, but we should try to avoid undue hassle for everyone - regardless of personal circumstances. --Ask me about your mother 19:32, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Have you ever asked Andy to unblock you? New toy[edit]
I have just wasted my afternoon learning about javascript rather than doing my thesis. Have a new toy which would allow people to have their own personal bookmark list down the side, under the community box. I would have to mess about with the common.js and the mediawiki space. The only draw back to this would be people who are not using it might see an empty box titled bookmarks appear before it disappears on the side. The only person being subjected to this at the moment is me. - π 05:58, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- Interesting, I wondered what you were doing there. If only there were a way to hide/vanish it if there is no content? ħuman 06:05, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- It should hide the box if you don't have a bookmark list, although it is done using javascript which loads after the CSS. - π 06:07, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, java is ugly on wikis. I got rid of my silly "edit buttons" after adding "bold/bold" 100 times when I thought I was clicking in the edit box, then the bar would load and that's what I actually clicked on. sort of. I think your idea is good, but maybe the sidebar isn't the best place for it? Like make it a user page based feature perhaps? ħuman 06:10, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
- I might shove the code I stole off MediaWiki in any way as that is useful if people want to customise any of the boxes down the side. That way if someone feels they are desperately missing something in the toolbox or navigation box they can add it themselves. - π 06:16, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Youtube and Haiti[edit]
Ok, I know I've been a bit too attention whorish with the youtube thing at times, but I was thinking of making a video where I announce that I'll donate a dollar to Haiti for every subscriber I have at the end of the month, up to $100 (and $.50 after that up to 200). Should I mention this in the saloon bar, or not?--Mustex (talk) 05:07, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Run with it, dude. Just ask me for production values advice first? Seriously, I know you mean well, but aim the web cam better, work on your script before reading it, etc. I don't mean that in a bad way, I just think you should learn to polish your approach. Or maybe you already have? ħuman 05:12, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

BTW, you said ask you for quality opinions. This time I actually rehearsed five or six times first, and did a second take when the first one didn't really work, and tried to aim the camera a bit more carefully. - Yeah, what's up with that? Anyway, feedback... much better framing, of course, and the pace and presentation of the words is also far better (although there were weird audio/video sync issues on my "copy"). One minor thing, can you back away from the camera and zoom it to re-fill the frame? You're so close your face is warped by the short focal length/macro effect. Unless you really look like that, in which case, sorry, oops. ħuman 02:22, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

- I listened with one earphone. I was like 'This is not how I remember ;________;'. No drums! No piano! Then I tried the other one... wtf? That must be a sixties thing -- really mental use of hard panning. -- =w= 00:57, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- They hadn't really figured out how to do stereo properly yet - and were often just using 3 or 4 track masters, and just made the stereo mix by putting some on the left and some on the right. Heck, even on Sgt Pepper, the Beatles themselves only participated in the mono mix, then left the stereo mix to Emerick (and probably Martin). What's weird is the transition phase, where they were sensible with the bass and lead vocals, say, but other stuff would just get stuck in all kinds of weird places. I did some weird hard panning stuff on some of my songs just for fun, inspired by those idiots. On one the guitar and vocal, as I recall, are hard panned L and R, but there's a heavy reverb of each on the opposite channel. I think. ħuman 01:13, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- There was an interesting ramble on Pitchfork where they mentioned that bands of that era considered the mono mix the definitive version [8]. It's part of a pretty huge series about some 2009 remasters, which is all pretty much fascinating. I kinda like the idea of things in odd places, in general. I think you can get away with hard panning for almost anything. Anything except bass. +, that reverb idea you mentioned is a great way to 'mollify' the effect - I know some modern records that have the lead in L (say) and a blanket of reverb in R. The effect is very subtle - you don't hear the reverb unless you listen to R separately, you just an impression of depth. Or something. Of course, there is always the danger that Mei will think she has mislaid half the song. That is a continuing issue. -- =w= 01:38, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Cool, yeah. On my L/R reverb song it's not very subtle reverb, it's a very pronounced echo synced to the beat (which apparently my Alesis toy can do without me asking), but I can see how what you describe should work well. A lot also depends on how "natural" one wants the music to sound versus how "artificial". Oh, and that song is here. ħuman 01:46, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- PS, I saw the Boomtown Rats once and their stage setup was very interesting - the drummer was at the far left. Can't remember if it sounded that way or not though. ħuman 01:49, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- That reminds me of [9]. Except yours is much warmer somehow. Those delay/echo effects make it very warm <---- Mei likes delay. I have no idea how panning works in a live setting, but the bass drum should be ok wherever in theory. Hm..... Do people mic up (or whatever) drums when they're live? -- =w= 01:59, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Wow, that guy sounds just like my voice! I think I also got a warmer "tone" with all the nice yummy distortion on the guitar and the old tube amp. Live concerts are presented essentially via a giant stereo, everything is miked and sent to the board where it's mixed. In small venues they usually don't need to amp the drums though, so they'll sound like they are wherever they are placed. ħuman 02:13, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Vote Mei for music archivist! See also [10], just because it's a classic, especially the end. I agree that your tone is great. I know nothing about guitars, but it seems like a lot of people lose all the melodicism (not a word but I don't care) when they use distortion. It's just like listening to cotton wool. I like it when distortion actually does help the song. -- =w= 02:44, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello Human. I have removed MC's link to his blog, as it is nothing more than an attempt to troll from outside in the cold. If we don't give him a podium he'll go away, etc etc etc. If you disagree, it's your page, I just wanted to say sorry for the intrusion. HI MEI! Thanks for offering living proof of the fact that the Loya Jirga has completely undermined RWs pretensions to liberality. Human and Human alone can make the choice as to whether the link is allowed on HIS OWN USERPAGE. This dereliction of user rights is astounding, it really is. Human gave an implicit consent by his comment and it is up to him alone to make the choice to remove the link. Sorry...[edit]
I screwed up. I was patrolling on "autopilot" and marked two changes by BenBest to your cryonics essay as patrolled. It was after the fact that I noticed that it was YOUR essay with the "comment only on the talk page" header. I OK'ed them absentmindedly because they aren't terribly written or obtrusive, but still, it's your essay and I feel I owe you an apology. The additions are here and here if you want to find them for easy removal or whatever. The Foxhole Atheist (talk) 19:02, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- Nevermind. Bob M fixed it by moving the comments to the talk page. I didn't know what the protocol was for this situation. Have a good one. The Foxhole Atheist (talk) 19:10, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- No harm done. Your telling me helps, and so does Bob already fixing it. I would have noticed an edit to the essay anyway and would have wondered why someone was doing it, Ben probably wasn't quite sure of some of our wiki-ways, and I had invited him to read it and comment on his talk page a day or two ago. Now that the power is back on and the 'net is back I'll go check it out. Thanks! ħuman 00:50, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

- How about just renaming it? ħuman 04:19, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- Whatever works. I know this opinion is not shared across the board, but I just think there are some lines that we can't allow people to cross in our space. Freedom of speech =/= being able to threaten violent sexual assault. I'd be perfectly happy to continue to keep a guy who made such an edit far away. That's not MC trolling stuff....TheoryOfPractice (talk) 04:22, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- Sure, but a few days of blockage makes them bored and they go away, right? Like I wouldn't unblock someone that was blocked an hour ago, that would be stupid. ħuman 04:34, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

You're prolly right. But if he does it again I'll....I'll...I'll do something realllly unpleasant. TheoryOfPractice (talk) 04:39, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
- Crooked Jim is a sockpuppet master and uses a proxy to come trash this site now and then. He's the one that I believe is from metapedia, because he's also the very, very Neo-Nazi one. Look at the account's I've renamed to Silly Vandal something or anothers. Gooniepunk2010 Oi! Oi! Oi! 05:45, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
