Suggestion re.:suggestions[edit]
How about a suggestion/question box directly accessable (-ible?) from main page? Directly relevant to RW I mean - not about articles or cp or anything like that. There doesn't seem to be anywhere for grabbing everyone's attention other than relying on a general lurking tendency.
Reason I ask:
When I first logged on to RW there were very few edits by IPs. They are increasing by the day. (Even sysops (and I!) have been known to do it) One of the reasons for user names is to give a feeling that you know the person and can track their edits relatively easily. You can't do that with an IP address. It takes seconds to log on so why not do it?.
"I'm at work & can't remember my password."
Well why not register under "yourname2" or some such?
I would suggest that IP edits be banned - it's easy (so I understand) on a wiki, but that would exclude the timid and shy. KeepMe informed 20:20, 15 August 2007 (CDT)
- Well, part one I did as well as I thought I could - linked to "help" from the noticeboard, and asked people who think they can "help" to "watch" it. There is a decentralized aspect to wikis that can be disconcerting, but I think it's also part of their strength. There is no "central alert" feature because it would get really clumsy as membership increases. Part two, I think the only "partial cure" is to shame people who edit without logging in in every way possible. It's tough, because you don't want to leave a nasty note at some IP's talk page, after all, they may be "shy", or just dipping in their toe. The best thing to do is put the {{welcome/IP|yourusername}} on the talk page. Then, if you see that it's some dumbass like you or Trent or Doc, go to their talk page and humiliate them thoroughly. As far as banning IP edits, I don't think that will ever happen here. I know, it takes away the easy "trusted editor, I won't go look" aspect of watching pages or recent changes, especially with your current slow d/l times, but I find I am slowly learning who those three or four fools who get timed out (or whatever) are by IP range, as well as username. Suggestions for guidelines, of course, are best made and discussed at RW talk:community standards. humanbe in 21:13, 15 August 2007 (CDT)

RationalWiki:Community Page Conservative put a little backbone in them, lets see how much. tmtoulouse harass 12:42, 21 August 2007 (CDT)
- Haha, cool. Nice reply. What's funny is how clueless they are about copyright law. Even without GFDL, fair use completely covers these. Heck, so does "fairness", in that we quote them in their entirety to refute instead of mining the articles. If I type it here, will they have the sense to go to the "side by side" category and find the others? humanbe in 12:49, 21 August 2007 (CDT)
- I wonder if its just bullying and street theater thinking we are a bunch of kids that they can intimidate, or if they really think they have a case. We will find out based on their next move. Either they will slither away and disappear again or actually do something. One is spineless but intelligent, the other is clueless but shows they have a little backbone. Its a catch-22. tmtoulouse harass 12:53, 21 August 2007 (CDT)
- Can you add dates to the copies of the emails? And aren't they "demands", not "threats"? I also don't know/can't tell if it's cluelessness or bullying, since they have both traits in abundance. Probably both in equal measure. They really think they own not only copyright but the right to prevent fair use commentary or parody, and they think since Andy's a lawyer his threats are big scary mean and must be obeyed. Of course, they have also formed a little "authoritarian" club, and probably forget that the ROW doesn't instantly snap-to and obey whenever given orders. humanbe in 13:28, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

Come to that, how would Andy prove damages? The original works weren't for profit, and Andy continually claims that no money is received. Not to mention, they aren't losing pagehits because of us, if anything they're gaining because we link to them. So taking that in with what's already said above, he'd have one helluva tough sell to a judge. --Kels 13:32, 21 August 2007 (CDT)
- Well, copyright law protects your "creations" you even if you aren't making money. No one can copy your cartoons without permission even if neither you nor they are making any money. However, (1) they are a GFDL site (eliminating all their rights to complain), and (2) we are quoting their material for the fair use of parody and commentary (in different places), both of which are explicitly protected, even if something is not GFDL. Anyway, the demands are either bullying or misguided (traits in plentiful supply at CP, go figure).
- The funny thing is, if they tried to just call our kettle black and do similar commentaries on us over there, they'd have to link to our files (or at least name the source) or we could claim infringement! humanbe in 13:41, 21 August 2007 (CDT)
- Protection, yes, and putting teeth in a cease & desist order, but if he were to claim damages above and beyond, he'd have a mighty steep climb to prove it. And again, fair use and CP's own shifting statements would probably stop it well before that stage. --Kels 13:48, 21 August 2007 (CDT)
- Well, actually, CP is not a GFDL site (the only time they claimed any connection with GFDL was during the Disclaimer slip-up, and that was fixed), unless I missed something big. However, they claim that they allow even broader re-use of their material than GFDL, so GFDL is actually supposed to be stricter than whatever they think they're using. --Sid 13:20, 22 August 2007 (CDT)
- Ah, ok, thanks. Deeper irony - they were GFDL by accident briefly when they copied and pasted Wikipedia's disclaimers without cleaning them up first. Can anyone say "CopyPasteia"? And they complain about us... humanbe in 16:10, 22 August 2007 (CDT)
- Wouldn't the copy+paste actually be in violation of GFDL, as they are not licensed under that and give no credit to wikipedia? Or is the slight rewording enough? ThunderkatzHo! 16:19, 22 August 2007 (CDT)

question[edit]
who was the IP user last night? Bohdan
- You mean M. 64? No one really knows. It seemed like Newton in disguise, but HoG is smart enough to easily impersonate Newt to tweak us. The IP also redirected themself to TK, but that was undone, at least until TK logs in and confirms it (if it was him). So, at this point, speculation is silly and it was probably you. Or some anonymous person who wanted to tweak us. That they "knew where to go" to join certain discussions certainly narrows who they might have been, of course. Just as new users who descend on certain pages at CP instantly give themselves away as probably not being noobs. I know you aren't going to warn us, but when is your cabal going to descend and pwn this entire site permanently? humanbe in 14:18, 21 August 2007 (CDT)
- It wasn't me. My cabal is currently preparing for what we are calling the "Glorious Pwn". You won't know what hit you, but you will certainly feel it. Bohdan

- Hahaha, well, you're welcome. And I am actually under deep cover (Shhhhhhh!), making many apparently "constructive edits" to hide my near-constant wandalism of the site. If we survive "The Great Pwn Forward", I suggest the next covert operation be code-named "The Five Year Pwn" humanbe in 15:14, 21 August 2007 (CDT)

- Not quite what I had in mind for the pic, say I wanted the picture itself to be a link, is that possible? Locke Always Watching...... 21:28, 23 August 2007 (CDT)
- Oops, (2), misunderstood you. I think I have tried, not sure if I succeeded. Usually they link, of course, to themselves. Haha, yes, I bet I tried on these templates. We want the brains to link to the main page, of course.
- (1), if it is compatible with the arguments in the old version of the template, it can simply be changed. If it is not, it will either need a new name, or all the previous iterations will have to be altered. Is there any way to skip the "first" argument (the new user's name) and go straight to the "new" first argument (welcomers name)? The old one is welcome|noob|oldhack (and welcome/IP|hack). So, first, you can add the timestamp anytime to welcome/IP. Second, if you can manage to program back-compatibility, I would instantly approve the "new" welcome template (but that's just me). How many pages have the "old" version on them? Oh, and before actual changes, I'd recommend a link to the new version and description of the changes be left at the template talk pages for "approval" of the mob. humanbe in 21:45, 23 August 2007 (CDT)
- I already did away with the first argument, so it now reads Welcome|oldhack|~~~~~, or did you mean that in another way? - I know you ditched the noob name. Trouble is, the old version will do weird stuff if parsed by the new version - it will say "welcome old hack, blah blah blah, noob name below instead of date". All I can really think of is editing them all. At least, for now. Try asking Linus or IceWedge or JTL, they're pretty damn good with this stuff. OK, here's an idea. Program it so that it checks to see if arg. 1 = pagename, if so, ignore it and use arg. 2. Can you do that? I might be able to, but I'll break it sixteen times first. Also, for easy comparison, here is an example of the old one for testing purposes.
