WIGOs[edit]

The up and down vote thingies on the WIGOs don't seem to do anything now. - Smerdis of Tlön, LOAD "*", 8, 1. 16:07, 28 June 2017 (UTC)

WIGO voting has some kind of bork going on. I vote something up and the green bit disappears. All the most recent WIGEAUX are showing zero votes. BicyclewheelToxic mowse.gif 13:51, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
Multi poll (mainly used in the pointless polls) is broken as well, it's impossible to vote. Christopher (talk) 15:25, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
Is it just me or are the vote thingies (WIGOs) broken? -- Onychoprion (talk) 16:07, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

I noticed that for the past week or so, the upvote and downvote buttons don't work on WIGO and To-do submissions. What's going on? Blitz (Complaints Box) 22:10, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

Doojang for adding next poll number is borked[edit]

It seems to work now, but the doojang for automatically adding and incrementing the vote code no longer works. - Smerdis of Tlön, LOAD "*", 8, 1. 03:29, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Not sure -- @Tim Starling has adjusted the WIGO code to work with MW 1.27, he might've accidentally borked that. The FCP Foundation (talk/stalk) 17:09, 31 July 2017 (UTC)

Spam and vandal issue[edit]

Here are more suggestions (copied and pasted from Mediawiki) of blocklists:

  • fSpamlist - fspamlist.com
  • StopForumSpam - stopforumspam.com
  • Sorbs - sorbs.net
  • SpamCop - spamcop.net
  • ProjectHoneyPot - projecthoneypot.org
  • Bot Scout - botscout.com
  • DroneBL - dronebl.org
  • AHBL - ahbl.org

If the spam gets hellish than this mw:Extension:Moderation may be a good idea. ClickerClock (talk) 05:59, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Atleast one type of bot seems to be getting through account creation at the moment, so the potential to these lists interest me greatly. Could also be related to our current CAPTCHA (or lack of it)? Tim would know. Reverend Black Percy (talk) 11:03, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
The spam bot got pass ReCaptcha NoCaptcha (our Captcha) and our honeypot. It's a very advanced bot. I would add mw:Extension:SpamBlacklist to our server to block spam URLs. ClickerClock (talk) 03:04, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
Can't we already block span URLs with the abuse filter? What can the spam blacklist do that the abuse filter can't? Christopher (talk) 18:55, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
Oops. Spamfilter comes preinstalled on this version of Mediawiki. ClickerClock (talk) 08:50, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
mw:Extension:SpamDiffTool is a mediawiki extension that makes editing Spam Blacklist easier. Spam Blacklist is like Abuse filter but focused on stopping spam. ClickerClock (talk) 09:22, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

@Tim Starling @David Gerard Of the above, fSpamlist, Sorbs, SpamCop, and DroneBL seem good. Not so for StopForumSpam, AHBL, ProjectHoneyPot, and Bot Scout. Thoughts? oʇɐʇoԀʇɐϽʎzznℲ (talk/stalk) 12:15, 10 July 2017 (UTC)

What does resource loader do? Christopher (talk) 12:32, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
Mediawiki 1.26 and onwards require gadgets to be loaded through Resource Loader. mw:ResourceLoader is a better way to deliver javascript to readers and editors as it's faster and gives browsers only the javascript files that it can actually run. ClickerClock (talk) 12:42, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Apparently it messes up archiving if there isn't a timestamp at the end. (The above stuff is ClickerClock not me btw). Christopher (talk) 12:58, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Login & SSL stuff[edit]

First attempt at SSL! STILL TEST ONLY[edit]

Gets an A- in Qualys' tester!

Current issues:

  • Still haven't got certbot behaving. Renewing 12 (!) domain name variants every three months will be a massive PITA because Linode's DNS management is for shit. Definitely need this in pace.
  • The wiki still defaults to http:// - that's a config issue in LocalSettings.php. We don't want to change this until go-live.
  • Lots of mixed content warnings - should be changed to protocol-neutral URLs where possible, left if not

(I couldn't figure nginx and I know Apache so I just used a minimal Apache setup in front of the Varnish. Should be able to cope.)

Now to work on certbot ... - David Gerard (talk) 14:14, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

OK I think I've got this working. We can start making stuff default https at your leisure. When I say "we", I mean "someone other than me", because I gotta get back to book stuff. BUT WE HAVE SSL AND I'M PRETTY SURE IT AUTORENEWS!
You'll get redirected to http:// pages a bit and may have to enter https:// in the address bar manually. But you should mostly see a solid green lock. If it's a mixed-content lock, hit F12 and find what's being served in plaintext. Fix. Repeat.
There's also X-Proto-Header: for requests that come in via SSL - this will be useful when we wanna go live with something to auto-redirect all http requests to https.
I also fixed our DNS and edited the apache conf on apache3 so that our alternate domain names all still work. You can get here as any of: rationalwiki.org www.rationalwiki.org rationalwiki.com www.rationalwiki.com rationalwiki.net www.rationalwiki.net ru.rationalwiki.org www.ru.rationalwiki.org ru.rationalwiki.com www.ru.rationalwiki.com ru.rationalwiki.net www.ru.rationalwiki.net - the ru names go to ru.rationalwiki.org, the others go to rationalwiki.org.

Blocked over https[edit]

Great to see some progress on https! Sometimes (seams to be random) when I try to edit a page over https I get the following message:

You've been blocked.
The intended blockee is 127.0.0.1, the intended IP is 127.0.0.1, and the block ID is #.
The person who gave the block is DNSBL, who gave the reason "Your IP address is listed as an open proxy in the DNSBL used by RationalWiki.".

SSL on login[edit]

SSL should be enforced on login. So we don't as yet hard-force all http:// accesses to https:// - but if you hit "Log in" in http:// then it will first redirect you to https:// to log in, then keep you there. Please try to break this.

(the forced-redirection to https:// can wait until I'm less coldified) - David Gerard (talk) 22:16, 7 August 2017 (UTC)

Login across browser windows[edit]

It seems that as of yesterday, when I open a new window, the default is for me to not be logged in even if I am logged in on another window. This is not the case if the new window is opened directly from a link in a logged-in window. Bongolian (talk) 18:21, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

Would one window be http and the other https? - David Gerard (talk) 19:44, 8 August 2017 (UTC)
Yes, that appears to be the case, but I didn't specify one or the other and I basically did the same thing each time. Am I being randomly directed to http or https? Bongolian (talk) 01:46, 9 August 2017 (UTC)
Nah, I'm just guessing you're logged in on https and not logged in on http. If you hit "Log in" on http, does it just take you to https logged-in wihtout asking password? Does that for me - David Gerard (talk) 00:22, 10 August 2017 (UTC)
Yes login from http does take me to https without asking for a password if I'm already logged in on https. Bongolian (talk) 03:23, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

SSL is now nginx[edit]

The shoeonhead fans tried a pissweak DDOS. It was enough to flood the otherwise-bare Apache I was using as an SSL frontend, so I switched to the nginx I already had in place and stuff's working again. Varnish caches the site and reCaptcha means they can't flood us with actual edits. All good so far - David Gerard (talk) 23:36, 18 August 2017 (UTC)

If it's any help, I noticed that when I followed a http bookmark to an unencrypted version of the site, I noticed that that acted as if I wasn't logged in. Then I added the "s" for "https" to the URL bar and found I was already still logged in. ~ 19:04, 16 August 2017 (UTC)

Password reset[edit]

I sum up: password reset emails were not being sent to my account's registered address, but talk page notifications and emails sent by a sysop to confirm my identity all were delivered correctly. Password reset worked fine in early July. Problem's fixed and everything seems fine, and maybe it's just me, but I thought it was worth mentioning here. Semipenultimate (talk) 16:23, 25 August 2017 (UTC)

I also had the same problem a few days ago. The reset email didn't wind up in spam or anywhere. It works now, but still... --DoomTay (talk) 15:26, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
@David Gerard, is there any way to check the logs for this? Maybe it's one provider in particular? Fuzzy. Cat. Potato! (talk/stalk) 16:15, 28 August 2017 (UTC)
um, possibly ... not sure off top of my head. Usually if a provider is refusing our mail, they just refuse it, it doesn't start working again ... DoomTay, who is your email provider? - David Gerard (talk) 23:13, 29 August 2017 (UTC)

To FCP: I checked my mail utility and found that all of my RationalWiki emails had been diverted into spam, but nothing was received after 7/13. The reset request was not diverted there (and did not appear elsewhere either) but the talk page notification did go through into spam when Christopher sent it. However I _do_ see that an email was sent by RW to me on 7/8 saying my user data was compromised and I needed to change my password... Semipenultimate (talk) 22:57, 30 August 2017 (UTC)

Problem with "New pages" page[edit]

There are two problems with the "New pages"[1] page:

  1. It sometimes lists new pages that are in user-space and not main-space, e.g. these pages now shows up: User:Penguinjoy0/BadMouseProductions, ‎User:Bryan See/Module:Citation/CS1 and Essay:Comment on Resurrection Research by Gary Habermas.
  2. New mainspace pages sometimes do not show up at all. E.g., these pages does not show up: Parents Against Underage Smartphones, Akademgorodok, Occupy Silicon Valley and Baba Vanga. This appears to happen when someone moves a page from their user space to main space.

The second problem is more significant because it becomes difficult to thwart bad pages that are slipped into the mainspace. Bongolian (talk) 17:07, 20 September 2017 (UTC)

It only shows pages that started off in mainspace, irrespective of where they are now. Christopher (talk) 17:21, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
Yes, but why should that be the determinant? Let's say there's someone who's autopatrolled and is making new pages of poor quality (I'm not accusing anyone specifically here, i.e., not the person who made the above pages). They start the pages off in their user-space then move them into main-space. It's really not that noticeable when the move takes place. Bongolian (talk) 17:25, 20 September 2017 (UTC)
If you can find the settings to change -- ie, search the MW documentation -- I'll gladly look them over. FᴜᴢᴢʏCᴀᴛPᴏᴛᴀᴛᴏ, Esϙᴜɪʀᴇ (talk/stalk) 22:10, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
OK, unless I'm mistaken, there are no such settings. Bongolian (talk) 06:20, 23 September 2017 (UTC)

@Bongolian Change the options. Namespace when set to (all) shows up all new pages. It gets a bit messy through. ClickerClock (talk) 07:51, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

OK, thank you, @ClickerClock. Bongolian (talk) 19:13, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Time to go all-SSL?[edit]

It's pretty easy to make all http:// links auto-redirect to https:// - do we think we're ready for this? I can switch it on tomorrow evening or something and see if the world catches fire.

In other news, Let's Encrypt is not auto-updating the SSL cert, for fairly stupid reasons most of which are LE's fault. We have till Oct 20, I'm gonna try to fix it properly instead of just bodging it by hand - the whole idea is it updates itself and you never have to think about it - David Gerard (talk) 22:50, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

If it prevents the frequent automatic log-outs then it's a good idea. Bongolian (talk) 23:30, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

Good idea. nom (dot) si is the domain of rationalwiki (dot) nom (dot) si, a subsite, which is completely blank. Very shady. @David Gerard should we report it for phishing? ClickerClock (talk) 04:12, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
It appears the PayPal is ... ours! They literally just mirrored the site and added their own ads - David Gerard (talk) 10:27, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

Extension:CheckUser[edit]

There is an editor claiming that another uses sockpuppets. I would like the Check User Extension installed so I can fact check those claims. @FuzzyCatPotato ClickerClock (talk) 04:12, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

There's been serious community opposition to even installing CheckUser on RW in the past, because Conservapedia abused it so egregiously. I think this is something that would need strong community consensus - David Gerard (talk) 10:28, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
Given that sockpuppeting in and of itself is not an offense on RW, I think that a stronger argument in favor of the installation would need to be made. Bongolian (talk) 20:29, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
I'd poll the bar. This looks like it might be useful. Zero (talk - contributions) 16:23, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
I don't think there's a need. As David Gerard said and a search for "checkuser" in all namespaces confirms, the community doesn't want it. Christopher (talk) 20:11, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
Resolved: No need

Fundraiser banner[edit]

I've already made a donation to the fundraising campaign.

Would it be possible to add something that can be clicked to make the banner go away? On my smaller and laptop screens it occupies 1/3 of the page. - Smerdis of Tlön, LOAD "*", 8, 1. 16:11, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Not thrilled with suggesting this, but you could add "rationalwiki.org###RationalWiki.27s_2018_Fundraiser" to your adblocker of choice. Given that the year is in the ID it won't block next year's notice. ikanreed 🐐Bleat at me 16:25, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
Yep, adblock is your best bet. FuzzyCatPotato!™ (talk/stalk) 13:19, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Talk page edit[edit]

Hi, I made an edit to the SPLC talk page - it shows that I've made two recent edits in the fossil records, but they don't appear on the talk page proper. I'm not sure if I'm having some kind of computer problem or if it's no showing at all. If you could check it out and let me know. Cheers.

@101.181.57.232 On talk pages, please sign your comments using four tildes (~~~~) or by clicking on the sign button: SigButt.png on the toolbar above the edit panel. You can also indent successive talk page comments using one more colon (:) for each line. Thank you.ClickerClock (talk) 13:23, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
Please elaborate. I checked and see your comments are perfectly ok. ClickerClock (talk) 13:25, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

RationalWiki:Annotated Qur'an is broken[edit]

Some of the Qur'an pages are only displaying our analysis and a bunch of visible tags, I assume it's the same with the Bible. I encountered the problem with RationalWiki:Annotated Qur'an/The Slanderer. Christopher (talk) 14:46, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

This appears to be a problem with the table formatting commands used on this page. A more user-friendly example that instead uses the "sura" template for formatting can be found at RationalWiki:Annotated Qur'an/Repentance. Bongolian (talk) 01:34, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
I fixed RationalWiki:Annotated Qur'an/The Slanderer, replace the first table with the template and it's fine. ClickerClock (talk) 06:12, 6 October 2017 (UTC)

Inter-language links[edit]

Since the Russian-language pages now total about 1000, it should be important to get them cross-linked with the English-language pages. Currently the English to Russian link fails, e.g. producing red-links like this:

Русскоязычным вариантом данной статьи является статья Пищевые добавки

And the English-language template (e.g., "{{En|Nutritional supplement}}" or the Russian/Cyrillic equivalent "{{Ан|Nutritional supplement}}") does not work at all from the Russian-language pages. Bongolian (talk) 18:42, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

I've fixed the Russian template and added an English one on RussianalWiki, any issues or can this be archived? Christopher (talk) 19:15, 1 October 2017 (UTC)
The Russian link looks good but the English link ({{Ан|Nutritional supplement}}) is still a problem. When used on the Russian-language side, the link to the English-language page is missing. The text in the box looks like this with open quote and no closed quote:

If you were looking for this article in the English language, it can be found at '.

Bongolian (talk) 23:38, 1 October 2017 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that's our fault for not setting the English Rationalwiki with its own "en." ClickerClock (talk) 05:37, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

Failed citations[edit]

There are failed citations that occur throughout RW. I think they worked before the upgrade, and were probably imported from WP directly by various editors. The failed references are of this format:

<ref>{{cite news|title=[http://www.naturopathic.org/files/AANP%20July_August%202013%20eNews.pdf Member in the Spotlight: Michael Uzick, ND]|accessdate=8 February 2016|date=August 2013|work=The Newsletter of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians|publisher=American Association of Naturopathic Physicians}}</ref>

Can these be fixed automatically somehow, or do they have to be fixed manually? Bongolian (talk) 05:00, 5 October 2017 (UTC)

We need Lua installed for it to work. @FuzzyCatPotato, look into maybe installing this extension? ClickerClock (talk) 07:54, 5 October 2017 (UTC)
Sounds like work. Herr FüzzyCätPötätö (talk/stalk) 20:34, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
Resolved: Unnecessary -- RW doesn't need high-scholarly citations, unless people really desire them.
