I'm studying Russian in college, and will be adding a few Russian political articles. Please, please clean them up, I'm still unfamiliar with wiki software, and can't do links. Merenptah Stela[edit]
Have dug up data on the Stela, but I don't have as many resources to tackle the Biblical side. From what I can gather though, I don't see how the Merenptah stela really challenges the dates of the Solomonic dynasty. The stela shows that "Israel" was a tribe or people and not an established state around 1200BCE, which the Ussher's chronology doesn't contradict as far as I can see. "David" doesn't form the supposed United Monarchy until 1055BCE, and the period of Judges in Usher to covers the whole time period of Merenptah's reign (as recognised by mainstream Egyptology, that is c.1213-1203BCE). Obviously Egyptian history does screw with Usshers dates at other points, but I'm not sure what we are hoping to prove here.
All ideas welcome. I'd like to play with this but could use some heads up on the abrahamic side of things. -- 00:58, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- My mistake. I was referring to exodus, and got my wires crossed. Exodus was supposed to occur at either 1440 BCE under Thutmose III if I remember correctly. That is not likely, as from my dim recollections of Egyptian history, he was a powerful New Kingdom Pharaoh, and they could not have built the city of Raamesses at that time. the other date is 1270, Ramasess II's mummy has been found, and it is not the mummy of a drowned man. It one of a man in his 80s. So they say Merenptah was the pharaoh. This doesn't work(again). It's more an Exodus couldn't have occurred in 1200s thing, than a monarchy thing. Judges doesn't mention Egyptian invasions. In fact, it barely mentions Egypt at all. Sorry, I'm a little tired at the moment. In summary, it is 1. First extrabiblical account of them. 2. Proof that they were in Canaan in the early 1200s. I'm trying multiple biblical chronology projects at the moment, sorry if I confused you. Take a look at my Sandbox too(not the snadbox, that is completely unrelated). An iron, yet caring fist 01:22, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, Usher definitely fails at Exodus, and at most points of Egyptian history. Working on his chronology the Exodus occurred in 1491BC, which puts in in the Thutmosid period (Thutmose II on standard chronology, but the margin of error in NK chronology could put it the reigns of Thutmose I or Hatshepsut), but the whole period was one of Egyptian strength, so the idea that the Exodus took place here is patently absurd - though Usher, to his defence, didn't have access to the material we do to work with - it's just ridiculous that modern "historians" in CMI/AIG still follow him.
- There is a very useful English version of Ushers work online [1]. I think what you have in the sandbox is useful stuff. Two ideas for how we could develop the material:
- 1. Rework the Evidence for the Exodus article into a larger article dealing with the literalist interpretation of the Exodus in general. I think the current article is too focused on one point and really doesn't encompass the whole range of issues involved with it, and a wider scope article would allow us to bring all the main points together in one definitive argument.
- 2. Create a new article dealing with Usher's chronological flaws in relation to Egyptian chronology in general, as there are several points where it runs ground. Could be done as a mini-project, with a main page simply comparing the two timelines, linking off to individual articles for the main points of conflict.
- I'm happy to collaborate on it in any way that's helpful, so let me know your thoughts. Recommend we hold off on the Merenptah stela until we can determine where discussing it will be most relevant - I'm thinking it's value lies in it's relevance to the "Merenptah was Pharaoh of the Exodus" argument. Anyway, let me know your thoughts :) -- 13:50, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thank you very much. I'm kinda busy today but I think we should expand the Exodus article for this. Again thank you, all my knowledge on this subject come from a 1950s history book on the ancient world(Our Oriental Heritage, by Will Durant, if it matters). Holding of on the Stela would probably be a good idea, my specialty is programming and physics, but I love history.
- I've created a page User:TheEgyptian/Exodus to work on a rebuilt article to replace Evidence for the Exodus. Feel free to edit and move your sandbox material in when you feel it's ready, or anything you want my take on (just leave a msg on my talk page on what you want me to look at). -- 23:49, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
