Nominations are closed.

This is the page to nominate potential board members and for nominees to accept or reject their nomination.

We are electing 4 board members out of the total 6. Nominees are encouraged to read the Guide for board of trustees election before accepting or rejecting a nomination. Campaigning takes place over here.

Process[edit]

Any user may nominate any number of users who meet the requirements, including themselves, by {{ping}}-ing that user name in the nominee section and informing that user (manually or with {{BoardNotice}}) on their talk page (talk page notification required). No second is required. Each nominee must accept the nomination or else they will not be eligible during the election.

Nominees may accept a nomination by adding their signature to it. Those who wish to decline nominations should strikeout the nomination with a brief note. Likewise, ineligible nominations should also be struckout.

To nominate, ping their user name and sign (otherwise, {{ping}} won't work):

*{{ping|tmtoulouse}} I choose you, Tmtou! ~~~~

If you want, you can then re-edit to remove your signature.

To accept the nomination: Indicate acceptance, delete their signature, sign, and move your username to "approved".

To reject the nomination: Indicate reject-ance, delete their signature, sign, and move your username to "rejected".

Requirements[edit]

In order for a user to be nominated they must meet certain requirements:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a registered user for 1 year or longer
  • Have 250 edits or more
  • Have at least 1 edit in the last 3 months

The Board meets about once per quarter (or more often, as necessary), usually for one-two hours. Almost all of the business of board takes place over e-mail. Depending on the number of projects and the time of year board members should expect to spend a few hours a month reading, contributing and voting in these e-mail discussions.

Members do have certain powers and duties candidates should be aware of. Membership in the Board means being a corporate director of the RationalMedia Foundation, Inc. In general, corporate directors exercise the highest level of management and control over a corporation and are ultimately responsible for its governance and welfare. They appoint and supervise the Operations Manager, have the final word on the corporation's purpose and goals and ensure that it has adequate resources to carry them out, ensure compliance with the corporation's legal and ethical obligations, approve major expenditures, and respond to significant changes of circumstance in a timely manner. In practice, their job is generally supervisory, as they delegate authority to carry out the corporation's needs to the Operations Manager, who in turn may delegate further authority to his or her staff.

Boardmembers' names will be signed to US state filings and IRS forms, which are both publicly available.

Current composition[edit]

The current members of the board of trustees are:

Per the board's charter, Board members serve a two year term. The Operations Manager is appointed by the board. This means that this year, we are electing four trustees as the terms expire for David Gerard, LeftyGreenMario, and BobM, and DuceMoosolini previously resigned.

Didn't respond[edit]

Failure to either accept or decline a nomination by the deadline (19 July 2020 Midnight UTC) counts as a declination.

  • Fuck it, I'll do what I can. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 13:32, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
  • Well I'm in a weird spot irl but I can still manage. We've all been procrastinating. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png LeftyGreenMario! 18:14, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
  • Self-nominated; a mere four days before the election, there are less than half of the required people to replace members who are stepping down. I will run unless and until a sufficiently high number of appropriate candidates accept nomination. RoninMacbeth (talk) 21:07, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
  • Am bored, might run for the board. I'm taking this so seriously I might forget about it and smoke weed instead, let's see what happens. — Dysk (contribs) 21:43, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

  1. Who are the one's leaving and why? Gunther1987 (talk) 12:16, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
At least LGM and David Gerard have their terms up after two years. They're free to run again of course. Not sure who the the third one is.Coigreach (talk) 13:04, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
    The third one is Bob M unless I'm mistaken. — Z 13:18, 6 July 2020 (UTC)
Actually I have not been on the board this year. I had to withdraw for health reasons after being elected last time.Bob"Life is short and (insert adjective)" 17:13, 7 July 2020 (UTC)

  1. Three objectively bad choices. Oxyaena Harass 19:04, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
Every choice, good or bad, is subjective.Coigreach (talk) 21:19, 7 July 2020 (UTC)
  1. What are the specific responsibilities of a board member? I understand that the Board handles the site finances, but what specifically would a nominee do? Would they need a specific skillset, or to be available at specific times? ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 21:47, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, the Guide for board of trustees election describes the responsibilities and effort. I don't know if there's anything above and beyond that; current or previous board members will have to provide that insight. The board is responsible for funding labor for our valued techies like Tim Starling to coordinate and perform upgrades, and care and feeding for the infrastructure. —cosmikdebris talk stalk 22:05, 8 July 2020 (UTC)
  1. What happens if the 4 people that have accepted their nomination are the only candidates? Do they automatically become board members, then? Gunther1987 (talk) 08:58, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
I assume a vote will still have to be held to figure which 3 get two year terms and who gets the 1 year that remains of Duces term after he stepped down. I guess the one withe least votes gets 1 year.Coigreach (talk) 14:47, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
