Top Gear
Hello, I saw the revert of the move of Top Gear to Jeremy Clarkson. Since Clarkson, Hammond and May's departures seven years ago, there have been 56 episodes with the presenting team consisting of Paddy McGuinness, 2019–present, Andrew Flintoff, 2019–present, Chris Harris, 2016–present, Sabine Schmitz, 2016–2020, Rory Reid, 2016–2019, Matt LeBlanc, 2016–2019, Eddie Jordan, 2016–2018, Chris Evans, 2016. The controversial aspects are very much associated with Clarkson (and not limited to the views he expressed on Top Gear) not his replacements. Can you share your thoughts on this?--Darrelljon (talk) 12:46, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- we have heard little much controversial from clarkson since leaving top gear and his controversies would likely not have made headlines at all if they did not happen on a popular prime time BBC show. aside from this some of the controversy involved scripted 'jokes' not unplanned off the cuff remarks (im thinking of the 'slope' reference.) his sidekicks and the producers were just as culpable in that regard - its not just clarkson AMassiveGay (talk) 16:12, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Darrelljon If you still care. Sorry, I've been sick.
- Well, you could pretty much put what you wrote above on the Top Gear page. You could emphasize that the controversial days of Top Gear are long in the past now, which the page hints at already. And if you think there's anything on the page that's irrelevant to Top Gear, go ahead and remove it. Although I'd say that anything Clarkson said or did while he was still a Top Gear presenter is relevant. Spud (talk) 04:52, 24 July 2022 (UTC)

Ban Evasion: Fuck You!
$100 says Ken is furiously writing an "essay" about how the atheist who goes by the moniker Ace McWicked says "there is no god" because he thinks he died. News to you Ace! Death is permanent! I declare victory once more! Now see these pictures with captions...but over 3 pages of meandering irrelevant gibberish. Acei9 03:06, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Strikeout humor
What's with the compunction against strikeout humor? Out of curiosity. Vee (talk) 10:45, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Vee Truth be told, I don't really feel that strongly about it. I think it's a bit naff and there are usually better ways of saying the same thig but it doesn't bother me that much. The last time it was, discussed however, several prominent users I respect came out strongly against it. Mainly because it was used inconsistently. Sometimes what was stricken out was a conservative subjective opinion (not typical of the opinion of a RationalWiki user). Sometimes it was something demonstrably true, like so-and-so is a convicted criminal. Anyway, it was generally agreed that striking out was not funny and we shouldn't be doing it anymore. Of course, since then, new users have come along, seen striking out on old pages, thought that was a RationalWiki-type thing to do and added more. Spud (talk) 11:32, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
- Ah. I may be guilty of that. Vee (talk) 11:34, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
- From my perspective, I think some of the anti-strikeout squad is often rather pedantic. Sure, maybe it's not the best approach to take all of the time, but instead of reworking the strikeout into the article, there's a tendency among the anti-strikeouts to excise wantonly, usually with an unhelpfully vulgar and vague edit summary (like "Strikeout humor is bullshit"). Personally I think some of the strikeout humor works sometimes. *shrug* BobJohnson (talk) 14:35, 22 November 2022 (UTC)
- Many years ago "strikeout jokes", "tumbleweeds" and Conservapedia were everywhere. Then people got tired of them as they were overdone and we decided to cut that stuff back. I guess fashions come and go.Bob"Life is short and (insert adjective)" 14:41, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

- some of y’all don’t seem to understand that humour is subjective. It’s kind of an egotistical tendency to just assume your aesthetic judgements are just factually correct and to be flabbergasted at anyone who experiences the world differently then you.- 22:58, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Humour is subjective indeed. What is less subjective is the reliable generalisation that overdone sticks made funny things less funny. The strikeouts have become tiresome. Unless it adds to the article (rather than distracts) it should go. This shouldn't be controversial. I don't find the Corbyn one remotely funny. Wow...Ace and I can agree on shit! - @Ace McWicked Thank you for your sympathy. I was in two minds as to whether I should feed the troll or not. At least thanks to you, I don't have decide whether or not to do it in the Saloon Bar.
- I'm sure my sister would have wanted me to take this opportunity to celebrate our Jewish heritage. So I'll say:
- Ken you, schmuck, there was no science denial involved. When did I say processed food was healthy? I'll tell you when. Never. That's when. Of course, it's bad for you. Every nudnik knows that. I would never suggest that anyone should eat large quantities of it or eat it regularly. But indulging once a year on 30 April isn't going to do anybody much harm. You, putz.
- And yeah, I was celebrating the all too brief life of my wonderful sister. Someone who died at the age of 42, leaving behind a 6-year old daughter and a husband who has to raise that child as a single father. But you just couldn't resist the chance to have a little dig at me, could you? And not only once but six times. That's another grave you've danced on, you worthless piece of dreck. You can add that to the list of many things you'll have to account for if you ever do find yourself standing before the G-d of Abraham. Spud (talk) 13:38, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- He was then getting criticism on the talkpage and he had to delete it. What a precious wee soul. Acei9 21:27, 1 May 2023 (UTC)
- I was going to ask if he'd created a page about me. But I see it's still there. And the same content is also on three other pages. That means there are now two pages about me on Conservapedia. The first being Essay: Mr. "Spud" Atheist is put through the potato grinder, which was created years ago, has stayed there in spite of several similar "essays" based on casual remarks RW editors have made getting deleted within hours of creation, been edited recently but strangely never been put in the RationalWiki category.

- So I see it's just some criticism by Rob Smith and LT that's disappeared from the talk page. I also notice that neither LT nor Nobs said what Ken was doing was in bad taste. No real surprise there.
- Also no real surprise that Andy has told Ken to stop writing about RationalWiki. So the stuff Ken's written about me might be the last piece of RW-related content he ever writes. And monkeys might fly out of my arse.

Hello there
So I’ll be creating the category for actual anti-Christian bigots, but I came to ask you what I should title it and which pages would justify having the category so I don’t make the mistake of having a misunderstanding. Rational Dude (talk) 12:57, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Rational Dude I think "Anti-Christian bigots" itself would be fine as the name for a category about people. So I suppose that should be a sub-category of "Anti-Christian bigotry", the category for the abstract concept. Spud (talk) 13:10, 9 May 2023 (UTC)
- That’s good. However, bigotry isn’t really abstract, it’s an observable phenomenon. But I’ll get to work right away! Rational Dude (talk) 13:12, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Am I allowed to create a page for a fictional political entity and add categories to it? Rational Dude (talk) 20:05, 11 May 2023 (UTC)
- I think pages are supposed to lack categories if they're in draftspace or userspace (unless it's a personal descriptor like Category:RationalWikians or something I guess). If funspace or mainspace it should be fine. Chillpilled (talk) 21:37, 11 May 2023 (UTC)

Ken is still going on about our unhealthy lifestyles. I’ll throw him a bone - I spent all weekend drinking and smoking. Yet I did a 14km hike and played cricket with casual team I have created. What I didn’t do? Sit on my ass editing a wiki for 20 hours straight. Acei9 02:28, 5 June 2023 (UTC)
- And now I'm a failed father and husband. That's rich. I don't want to be sitting with my wife and daughter having dinner. - I just did so. You can do that manually or automatically. For automatic archiving, you can copy-paste Spud's config at the very top of this page and then just change the username in the text, or look into changing the config options if you prefer (people vary it a bit). For manually archiving it, just add

That was really cool of you. Are you sure you're older than me? I'd swear you have that 'joie de vivre' that I wasn't born with. I dunno how you do it, but I'll keep on, Gaul Dernitt. DunSparce (talk) 04:05, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
- @DunSparce Yes, I'm now 50 years and 2 months old. And I cannot deny that I love life. Spud (talk) 07:51, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
- I had a friend literally text me last night. Close friend we were inseparable for about a year. First text from him on this phone because he's been sober and our days of terror years ago, woof, I'm gonna respect that choice. He moved away and it used to be something like if we called each other to talk, we'd somehow get drunker than you would assume is physically possible by rite of just chatting about things. Asked me for my address, i said 'are you getting married, because you can't hide a body here.' He's getting married in 200 some days. Nothing but love for the guy, he has been sober for years, had nothing but love for his soon to be wife. I am 36, almost 37, and I'll be damned if I succumb to the dread. They work together. He told me something very candid (not sexual but I will only dox myself, Not anyone around me, ask me for my address I will find yours) that she did that made him realize this lady is his lady. I had a hard time expressing my support, as a man. I told him exactly that. I'm so happy for you but I don't really know how to respond when you're gushing about her because GAY. He got it, laughed, and called me a brother. I think I'm telling you this because I've always noticed and appreciated your cool head and warm hand. I don't really need to say anything else on this wiki tonight. 2600:8804:500:FE90:DD62:17EC:1529:840A (talk) 03:20, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
Ghostwatch
I'm 10 minutes in and this is hilarious. The lights on the street blinding the family, and now the reporter on the street (after some probably BBC banter that I don't get) in charge of the lights. The less than sly delivery of 'yes I've taken the valium' could be a one off or it could be Chekhov's valium. Anyway, the cameras and lights are all covered, the introduction is set, I believe I've started it in good faith. i'll let you knowTorrent (talk) 04:04, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
- It took a very serious turn, i think, I dunno, I remember there being some signal, all is safe, and it seemed like 'this is a good time to send the kids to bed.' Before that, it was funny. There were the bright lights blinding people, the mom saying something along the lines of 'we took it to national news and that just made us look more like idiots, so we took it to local news.'. Craig walking as fast as he could away from any location where spooky stuff happened, the box of evidence that was smashed up porcelain plates and a watch with the line 'clocks stop' and 'I've given up wearing them' very funny line. Then leading into the second act, knocking production stuff out of the way.
After the signal it really played real ghost, I think. I would have to re-watch, I watched it a little late, it might have been my critical brain just nodding off.Torrent (talk) 01:46, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- @Torrent Glad you enjoyed it! And you should watch it late at night. And if you've been celebrating Halloween by having a few sherberts and a cheese and pickle sandwich already, maybe feeling a bit drowsy, that's all right too. Remember, it was first shown on BBC 1 at 9:00 PM on Saturday 31 October 1992. So that meant it was 10:00 PM when Michael Parkinson said it was time to send the kids to bed just before the really scary stuff started. I must say that when I first saw it as a 19 year-old student on that Halloween night 31 years ago, the fact that nothing really scary happens for the first hour just made it even scarier. I knew that the scary stuff was going to start eventually and that just added to the tension. Spud (talk) 08:51, 26 October 2023 (UTC)
- I completely see that. I was about 20 when I saw 'The Grudge' and it had me jumping away from shadows reflexively. I was like 5 when my parents rented Ghostbusters. The first scene, I loved the library, mean scary ghost lady in the library? Couldn't watch it. Pee Wee's Big Adventure? Couldn't watch the Large Marge scene. I was terrified of ghosts, my mom had to give me a spray bottle of water, said 'Ghosts really hate this stuff'. It was not holy water. But if I had to use the bathroom, I was spritzing that business everywhere. My mom and older brother really liked ghost stories and it was one way they got along with each other. My mom was the oldest of her siblings, my brother was the oldest. It took me a while to figure out. Torrent (talk) 03:36, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

I might put in for a job that means I have to move
I have a recommendation for a job, no guarantee. The position would mean I have to move a ways away. Not a million miles, but like probably 300-400 miles. I'm really honestly conflicted, and I can't bother people on Christmas. I think I have to take it, at least fire off my application for it. I am guessing by context you have taken a job away from home. I don't think it would hurt that bad, but I could use a take on leaving home. Perspective, I moved a lot as a kid, have not as an adult. Torrent (talk) 08:04, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Torrent I'll get back to you on that. For now, apply for the job. After all, you don't have to take it. Spud (talk) 13:48, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Torrent I said I'd get back to you. I've been busy with leaving one job and starting another and with moving into a new place.
- I've lived and worked in foreign countries since 1997, pretty much my entire adult life. And I'd really wanted to live and work abroad ever since I was 13. Leaving home and making a new home somewhere else was something I was very much looking forward to.
- I'm also guessing you're talking about moving from one part of the United States to another part of the United States. So, although I'm sure I'd be wrong to say you won't be facing any cultural differences, they won't be as extreme as the cultural differences I've faced. And I might be wrong, but I'm also guessing it won't be too difficult or expensive for you to travel back to see your family, if you want to.
Is everything alright?
Hi, Spud, how's everything? I'm getting increasingly worried about the risk of war between China and Taiwan in the near future, especially since 1 Xi is proving that he isn't as smart as everyone thought. 2 The fact that the Chinese economy is halting and 3 and most important, the West apparently cares a lot less than we though, especially the US (see my my last WIGO). How are the Taiwanese press and people treating the tension between the two countries? GeeJayKWhere all evil dwells Where every lie is true 03:13, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
- @GeeJayK Thanks again for your concern.
- I'll tell you this. My friend and former supervisor at Chang Gung University, a former colonel in the Taiwanese army, decided to get out of Taiwan because of risk of invasion by China. He is currently a visiting professor at the University of Nottingham in the UK. When that comes to an end in September 2024, he plans to retire and move to Ireland. He wants his young son to become an Irish citizen (and hence an EU citizen) so that he won't have to go into the Taiwanese army. He asked his adult daughter to come with him and she refused. She is a doctor in the Taiwanese army.
- Everybody else that knows him seems to think he's worrying about nothing.
- Since November, I've been a bit wrapped up in the process of starting a new job. I didn't even know there was going to be an election until last Thursday. But I can't say that I've noticed much of a change in how people are feeling or behaving.
- Again, I promise you that I'll get out if things get dangerous. Spud (talk) 03:36, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
Header quotes
How do you feel about me using quotes from fictional material on a page if it's appropriate for/relevant to the page's content in question? BJA2112 (talk) 19:39, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
- @BJA2112 I think that's fine as long as you make it perfectly clear that you are quoting a work of fiction. This is especially true if the quote is from a work of fiction that depicts fictionalized versions of real people. It is most definitely not OK to just write "You'll be back". King George III You have to write, "You'll be back." King George III in the musical Hamilton Spud (talk) 14:57, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
Not a puff piece
Contrary to what you people claim, the article about BadEmpanada was not a puff piece, as it also included his disputes with streamers like Vaush and Kurzgesagt as well as this video, which details the accusations of antisemitism against him in regards to Israel. Not to mention, I literally cited his Holodomor video, which was heavily scrutinized for supposed genocide denial. I also literally clarified that BadEmpanada having an article is beneficial for RW's missionality, due to his stance on Zionist propaganda, American exceptionalism, and Latin American history as well as his political disputes like his one with LonerBox on Israel-Palestine. Plus, Vaush and Destiny have plenty of videos responding to BadEmpanada. If you want someone critically analyzing his claims, Aztlan Historian is a prime example. Would you like to help me with this draft?
I decided to write this draft (which will become a mainspace article once it is done) about a very interesting topic about Islam, which I think is very important because it is one of the main resons why I left Islam: it's the story of Dhu al-Qarnayn. However, I am still a beginer at RationalWiki and I don't really know how to write full articles, so would you like to help me with this? Yassine Mehdi (talk) 10:43, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Yassine Mehdi Oh, yeah. Alexander the Great in the Quran, based mainly on the highly fictionalised medieval European Alexander Romances. I agree it's something we should have an article about. I'd be happy to help in any way I can. Spud (talk) 11:43, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- You said you will help me but we didn't but we haven't made much progress on writing the draft. Yassine Mehdi (talk) 17:21, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
