I'm sick and tired of you clogging up recent changes with minor edits. So I've made you a ninja, this means that you can 'bot' yourself when doing minor housekeeping. Douglas Weller

Just wrote this on Tyrannis's page: Sorry, tried to create an account but failed. Not exactly happy to see all that nonsense about me. In fact, I'd rather have the article deleted, I don't seek publicity. I've edited it to remove some flat out lies and straighten out some confusion, but as I said, I'd refer it to be deleted. I'm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Dougweller on Wikipedia and you can email me from my talk page if you want to verify who I am. Thanks. You're Welcome

Hi, thank you for your kind words and I am glad Tokyo Classified was useful for you! Funnily enough I just got unblocked from Wikipedia yesterday, after a five year shut out (very long story). I left Japan five years ago and live in the U.S. now and have been working on a few projects, including my wiki which I just launched last week. I just found RationalWiki yesterday and it looks interesting so I'll lurk around for a bit and see how it goes. Sparkzilla (talk) 05:42, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Cult

On Raëlism you described it as a cult. I think this is disparaging and deorotary. Alternative religions have enough condemnation from the mainstream religions as it is, but now an encyclopedia also has to use this term? Can you self-revert please? 89.243.169.171 (talk) 14:39, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

In case you are under the mistaken impression that this is Wikipedia - it is not, it's RationalWiki. And RationalWiki is not an encyclopedia. (Also note: I'm not Spud.)--ZooGuard (talk) 14:44, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Answer

You asked wheher Kutub al-Sittah provides fodder for Islamophobes. Well, yes it does, for instance allegations of peodphilia by Muhammad come not from the Quran but from Sahih Bukhari which is in Kutub al-Sittah. Futhermore, the majority of sharia law is based on these books. Pass a Method (talk) 16:13, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Alien vs ET

I notice you've changed alien to extraterrestrial in many cases. This is generally the right perception, but it is worth pointing out that not all UFOlogists consider them to be extraterrestrial. (Other than imaginary) Extradimensional and Ultraterrestrial are the other alternatives.--Albannach (talk) 14:07, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

The reason I've changed the link, not the wording, I've left it as aliens, is because the Alien page isn't about creatures from other planets or other dimensions, it's about foreigners. I'm not trying to be pedantic about what the little green men should be called, I just don't want the link to go to the wrong page. Spud (talk) 03:30, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

Less Wrong

With respect to Julia Galef. Why do you think it appropriate to call Less Wronger's crackpots?

I don't know a goddamn thing about LessWrong but you seem to be mistaking this wiki for one with a neutral point of view and trying to remove bias. That's not the way it works here. Spud (talk) 14:13, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Isn't it fundamental part of rationality to remove bias? Funny name for a wiki that doesn't.LaochCailiuil (talk) 15:27, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
"But I thought this was supposed to be Rational Wiki." Drink! Spud (talk) 14:36, 13 May 2013 (UTC)
Well, LessWrong isn't the be-all and end-all of rationality (neither is RW, since you're asking) and the fact is that many of the more... esoteric ideas don't stack up to much. Yudkowsky's core ideas on rationality and using Bayes-like updating of your beliefs are fine (the philosophy of language stuff is also fine, but is mostly a rehash of Wittgenstein and/or Quine anyway), but the nano-tech, cryonics and singularitarian AI stuff don't stack up to fact, and the quantum mechanics stuff - speaking as someone who actually deals with that quite frequently in a professional capacity - isn't up to much and is very, very badly explained. There are very few people here who actually refer to LW (as a whole) "as crackpots" (two, in fact) and most treat it with the same level of "good, but..." that you should do for any source. Yeah, Brx is right for once. Spud (talk) 02:40, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Why did you revert my latest edit to the Pandeism page?

I was trying to eliminate potential bias in the article by removing the last part detailing the second theory (that God destroyed itself).

Kuu (talk) 00:24, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Because RationalWiki pages are not supposed to be unbiased. Spud (talk) 05:53, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

Why I want to archive the old discussion

There’s a lot of pointless and incorrect speculation (some of which is my incorrect speculation) on this talk page. That’s why I wanted to archive it: I don’t think it’s fair to other editors to read reams of my stream of thought as I come up with a good refutation to Lisle’s notions.

The Anisotropic synchrony convention (ASC) is a perfectly acceptable, albeit obscure, sub-branch of special relativity, so questions like “What about the Maxwell’s equations that use the speed of light?” miss the point.

In addition, there has been a misconception that Lisle has proposed a geocentric Anisotropic synchrony convention (light travels infinitely fast towards Earth, at other speeds elsewhere). This is not what Lisle proposed; he proposes that, for anyone anywhere in the universe, light travels infinitely fast towards them and at the speed of c/2 away from them. It seems bizarre, but special relativity allows it.

The problem with Lisle’s paper is not the ASC. The ASC is, if you will, the distraction while Lisle pulls his slight of hand elsewhere. The slight of hand is this: Lisle is proposing that the entire universe was created about 6,000 years ago (“everything in the universe was made in the span of six days [...] this creation happened a few thousand (roughly 6,000) years ago [...] God tells us that the stars were created on the fourth day to give light upon the earth” Lisle 2010) with the artificial appearance of age (“Just as Adam was created mature, needing no time or process to reach adulthood, so was the universe” Lisle, 2010).

The only artifact of an universe created 6,000 years ago with the appearance of artificial age that Lisle objects to in his paper is light in transit (“I suggest that it is reasonable (and in fact necessary) to suppose that distant starlight did in fact originate from the star, and was not created in transit.”, again from Lisle 2010).

Hence, this bizarre ASC which Lisle uses to try and make a young universe look like an old universe has its own set of problems. One being this: In our Isotropic (Yeah, yeah, I know. It might be any of the infinite possible Anisotropic universes, since they all appear identical) universe, if there were a giant mirror 5,000 light years from Earth, and we looked in that mirror, we would see the Earth as it looked 10,000 years ago. Lisle’s ASC universe is observably different: In Lisle’s ASC universe, that mirror will not show us anything (or, should I say, it will show us whatever Lisle interprets as being “formless and empty”) for the next 4,000 years.

Another issue with Lisle’s ASC universe is that it is geocentric: Observers elsewhere in the universe will see a circle of darkness (or whatever passes as “formless and empty”) where the Milky Way and The Earth should be; this circle of darkness will contract and the final visible star for them will be our sun. The reason for this Geocentric POV is not because of Lisle’s alternate way of looking at special relativity, but because the miracle of all of the stars appearing at once (as per Lisle’s paper) is one that Lisle alleges God has done for the benefit of Earthlings and in Earth’s frame of reference.

Samiam (talk) 07:05, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

If someone disagrees with me, and has science backing them up, I want to hear it. My goal is to have good science and a good refutation to this creationist claptrap. Not nonsense like "what about Maxwell's equations?" (there are equivalent ASC forms of those equations) and "A geocentric ASC creates an observably different universe" (true, but that is not what Lisle proposed). Some of my initial ideas were wrong. I was corrected and have subsequently updated my refutation to Lisle’s ASC paper. Right now, the issues I see with Lisle’s paper is that it creates an observably different universe which has a geocentric point of view. Samiam (talk) 07:28, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

A editor of yours doxxing people

An editor of yours under the nickname fastzander is using the name "Marjan Siklic" as my real name. There are a few issues with this

1. I never used that name in any of my writings 2. The only source for this name is Encylopedia Dramatica, aka this picture https://encyclopediadramatica.es/File:MarjanSiklicFB.JPG

He used the following name here

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/RationalWiki:Webshites http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/List_of_Internet_kooks#Economic_doomers

I think this is highly against your rules, as it is not only doxxing an innocent person whose name I used but I never used this real name in any of my online writings.

"Anti-science"

I removed Anti-science from the Rated articles category because it was the only article that was in that category and not in one of the three sub-categories. Is there a reason that it, and it alone, remains there? Thanos6 (talk) 05:56, 9 July 2014 (UTC)

You recently reverted my edits to the Circumcision article. Please review the talk page; you will find that I tried multiple times to engage the community to work out our disagreements, but no one will communicate--several people reverted my edits without using the talk page at all, and user:Weaseloid explicitly stated he was reverting my edits for errors that I had explicitly identified as changed in a previous Talk page post. Hey

Thanks for cleaning up Theo van Gogh. English is not my first language, as you might have noticed. So, was the article 'on mission' as you guys call that over here? Any tips or suggestions if I want to contribute more to Rationalwiki? (InsertOpinion) (talk) 11:17, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

Glad you appreciate it. I had guessed (I don't think any native speaker would have written "murder on van Gogh" instead of "murder of van Gogh") but then, I've seen much, much worse writing from native speakers in the past. Your article seems completely "on mission" and worthwhile to me. Others might disagree but I don't think they will. If I see any problems with articles you create in the future, I promise to let you know. Spud (talk) 15:46, 2 February 2015 (UTC)

That is why I think...

...letting one guy run his own private wiki in a language that no other editors read and giving it the RW seal of approval is a shitty idea. Peace. AgingHippie (talk) 16:09, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

How could RW fix this problem? FrizzyCatPotato (talk/stalk) 17:12, 5 April 2015 (UTC)
I certainly agree with you, AgingHippie. That's what happens when sysops just assume that someone creating articles in another language is translating articles out of English without checking what's really being written. All I can say is, don't let it happen again! We have to try to make sure that we don't allow any articles in other languages to stay here that we wouldn't allow in English. I'll keep on checking any new Portuguese articles and, if it's all right with the rest of you, kill on sight any that don't belong on RW. (I don't speak Portuguese but I do speak French, Spanish and Catalan, so I can usually get the gist of what they're about). If the Brazilian guy keeps creating articles about stuff he likes (or doesn't like) that has nothing to do with our mission, I'll try to have another word with him. I don't know if any of you are thinking about making this an "English only" wiki. It might be worth discussing. Spud (talk) 05:54, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

That's right. You can see it yourself if you go to his user page and follow the Facebook link there. In the original language, he said this, "Eu vou abandonar a Wikipédia o Rationalwiki e outros enciclopédias que eu tentei participar. Valeu pela expériencia." Whelp

Thanks for waiting till I finished editing. Now the side with sketchy non-reasons for deletions like "I'm not saying this doesn't deserve mention on SOME level, I'm just saying that this article from top to bottom is an atrocity" (cognitive dissonance much?), "Many feminism related things are on mission for RW, an article about games that are feminist are not" (because feminism suddenly becomes non-missionable when games are involved? >.>), "I think the new title is about as bad as the old one (it's swapped inaccuracy of description for verbosity)" (titles with 6 words are too verbose to exist? wut?) and "Cruft magnet" (this just synonymous with "I don't want us to treat this subject") has won. I find it remarkable how quickly RW's fervent interest in/support of feminism wanes as soon as video games get involved somehow. 142.124.55.236 (talk) 13:51, 19 August 42015 AQD (UTC)

Come on buddy, walk it off, walk it off. You'll be fine. I don't think "our" reasons were sketchy for deletion at all. They weren't even really met with anything other than "Hang on while I expend more time and energy on this article literally as it's on the chopping block". I think the article was sketchy, and the article had nothing to do with furthering the cause of feminism or even documenting it in a meaningful way. The only cognitive dissonance that might be present in that quote from me would be the fact that I give you any benefit of the doubt regarding any conceivable use for that article, while also pointing out the obviously derpy nature of that whole attempt at writing. If you suggest that only one of those convictions can stay, it's obviously the latter, although I maintain you're just swinging for the fences right now. I would admit extending a positive message even to an article so blatantly broken would appear a little contradictory, but I stand by that. I'd rather be too generous than too unforgiving. And besides, egalitarian and feminist principles are not poorly represented here. But armchair third wave feminism placed in contribed contexts and practiced by people who make things up as they go along (in contrast to academia) is an irrepresentation of anything you could call feminism, as even its opponents would agree. And besides, I'm still not leaving anything out of the question for all time. I didn't start the vote, I suggested it. I didn't delete the page, that was also done by another contributor. I didn't sockpuppet votes to the end result of 13 to 2 (in under 24 hrs). I'm just saying that that list was cringeworthy and admittedly trollbait. Nothing personal to anyone. Make an essay out of it, grow it with your henchmen and then one day it might in fact be different enough from that other one in important ways enough that it'd be fit for an article. Nothing to it but to do it, so let's get to it, buddy boy. Reverend Black Percy (talk) 14:14, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for finally replying. I thought you'd chosen to treat my question as rhetorical. I might use some of Kev's music in some of my lessons one day. A lot of my students would enjoy those tunes (although probably not for the full 3 minutes). It still sounds to me like "Scheming Weasel" is his best work. Spud (talk)
Great stuff — I believe the melody is originally from an old Winnie the Pooh film featuring Woozles, though I could be mistaken. Regardless, Kevin McLeod has very clear licensing info on his page. In many cases, you can use all of his compositions royalty-free (in exchange for music credit). Happy listening! Reverend Black Percy (talk) 16:58, 19 November 2016 (UTC)

What specifically was wrong with my edits? I tried to make a slightly less biased and more neutral point of view. ConservapediaRules (talk) 12:45, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

This isn't Wikipedia. We don't adhere to a neutral point of view and we don't have to be unbiased. But what I really objected to was the Daily Mail-style stuff about some refugees really being economic migrants who want to go back to their home countries on holiday.

And basically you're saying that RationalWiki doesn't have to take facts into account because 'we don't adhere to a neutral point of view and we don't have to be unbiased'? Isn't that, like, against the entire point of 'refuting pseudoscience'? ConservapediaRules (talk) 10:23, 10 August 2017 (UTC)

Scientific definition of pedophilia

So... Tell me what is wrong with:

Pedophilia (a.k.a. paedophilia or pædophilia, if you're British) is the psychiatric disorder of an adult person, or old adolescent, who is sexually attracted by prepubescent, that is, children who have not yet reached puberty.[1] Broadly speaking, the word "pepophilia" is used to denote the sexual attraction of an adult to a minor, although this is scientifically incorrect. Indeed, the technical terms for sexual attraction to older minors are "hebephilia" and "ephebophilia"

and why you reverted it back with:

Pedophilia (a.k.a. paedophilia or pædophilia, if you're British) is the common term for sexual attraction to a minor (if you're an adult). In technical medical contexts it has the narrower definition of the sexual attraction to prepubescents only.[1] The counterpart technical terms for sexual attraction to older minors are "hebephilia" and "ephebophilia",

I also would like to hear why you just reverted it back, instead of joining the discussion and giving your (surely brillant) explanation of why the first line of the article should give a definition of pedophilia which makes a 18 years old man with a 17 years old girlfriend a pedophile; instead of giving the scientific definition of pedophilia.

Strieber

I'm baffled by your decision to move the Strieber page. The reasons you've given aren't sound. The article was rewritten from the ground up. It doesn't resemble except in the broadest way the WP article that a few months back I made the mistake of experimenting upon. Sections like the one on the Whitman shooting and Strieber's M.O. are completely new and make up roughly half the text.

Perhaps you haven't looked at new article too closely. While there's overlap in topics discussed in the WP article, there's not enough similarity to merit a plagiarism charge. I think this can all be put down to the perception created - by me as a newbie - sandboxing the WP article to play with. Now since then, this article seems tarred with the plagiarism brush no matter what. Hochichi667 (talk) 10:05, 20 January 2018 (UTC)

I moved it because the majority consensus here was that the article shouldn't be deleted but isn't ready for main space. Plagiarism has nothing to do with it. You have been told that the article needs to be better sourced. That seems to be the main problem. Spud (talk) 10:19, 20 January 2018 (UTC)
I haven't a lot more time to spend on this, but it still seems as if you haven't looked at the article recently. The consensus you cite was a few weeks back. Since that time I basically rewrote the article from the ground up and added sources. It's comparable to the Linda Moulton Howe entry when it comes to sourcing. Bait and Switch

I'm really interested to hear your reasons for undoing the edit to the Bait and Switch page. Another mod said I should make the suggestions by starting a discussion on the Talk page, so I did. No one came back to me to explain why my example wasn't valid. It seems that people don't like it much, perhaps because they feel implicated, but they can't explain why it isn't an example. So I reasonably concluded that it had passed muster, so I added it again only for a different mod to become challenged and revoke it without explanation. If it helps calm your defensiveness, I am an atheist myself. But this is a valid example of bait and switch, isn't it? Star Gazer (talk) 11:56, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

Reverts

Can you explain those reverts you're having with 88.98.241.40 (talk · contribs · block  · rights  · rename) ? --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png 🎄LeftyGreenMario!🎄 18:31, 5 August 2018 (UTC)

@LeftyGreenMario I did rollback because it was the easiest way of checking all those changes. If the changes had been good, I would have undone my rollback and restored the changes. I just didn't want to click through ten different versions of one page. As it happened, most of the changes were attempts to ideologically rewrite the pages or were just very badly written. I don't doubt that most of what was added about Jeremy Corbyn was true. Unfortunately, it was all completely unreferenced. And when saying things like that about a living person, good sources are vital. Spud (talk) 23:17, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
There's a better alternative. If someone has made multiple changes you want to review in one go, you should check the page's history. Go to the revision before the multiple edits. Click on "edit". You'll see a warning about editing an older version. But anyhow, don't actually alter anything. Under the edit field, click "show changes". You can now see what has changed without reverting anything. If the changes aren't good, then save. This is the equivalent of reverting edits, actually, and it's what I did when I didn't have sysop tools in other wikis. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png 🎄LeftyGreenMario!🎄 04:02, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Well, you live and learn! I'll do that next time. Spud (talk) 09:52, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
Don't mind me perving on your talk page, but there is a much better way to view multiple diffs @LeftyGreenMario. Next to the "prev" links, there are two columns of circular ("radio") buttons. Hit the one on the left before the relevant block of revisions. Now hit the one on the right for the final revision. Press "Compare selected revisions" up the top or bottom of the list. You are now viewing the difference between a whole bunch of intermediate revisions, with a link that can be copied etc.
As for patrolling them all, just don't be so lazy; the "Mark as patrolled" and subsequent "Newer edit" link are conveniently in the same place, and it's not hard to do a whole block quickly. —Kazitor Kazitor sig pic.png 12:18, 12 August 2018 (UTC)

Coming in off the Recent Changes page, I have to say: even if that weren't a seemingly deliberate attempt to misinterpret and take advantage of some of the awkward phrasing that advanced scientific fields often suffer from, I would have to throw my vote in with the one who didn't delete their opponent's talk-page comment (which I'm pretty sure we're supposed to dole out a punishment of some particular sort for) in a fit of pique. ~ 01:54, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
Oh sorry, that was an accident. I wasn't sure what I was doing, as I was fiddling around trying to get my *own* comment back, which I had mysteriously vanish on me and then had to retype.Skadooshbag (talk) 03:46, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
@Love Skadooshbag reverted the comment. That's far less serious than deleting a comment. Unless it's a pattern of behaviour there's no need to talk about punishment. Users make mistakes occasionally. CowHouse (talk) 05:04, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
@Skadooshbag OK. I'm here. I don't really know what you want me to do. I don't know anything about science. I suggest that neither of you edit the Self-refuting ideas article for now. I also suggest that you say in the Saloon Bar that you'd like more people to join in the discussion at the Self-refuting ideas talk page. Then you might reach some sort of consensus. @RoninMacbeth Thank you so much! You've made me feel warm and fuzzy all over. You know, there actually was a slightly longer page about me on the old RationalWikiWiki. A lot of what it said is still applicable to me today and, considering how notoriously nasty Old RWW was about everybody, it was probably the least rude page about any RW user on the site. Just throwing this out there, couldn't we just move "Jesusween" to Funspace, similar to the Jesusland article? ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 11:45, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

I would not object to a separate Jesus Ween (that was the official spelling) Funspace article. I think that the best thing to do is to have a paragraph about Jesus Ween in the main section of the Halloween page. There is a good Huffington Post article about Jesus Ween from 2011. I plan to create a paragraph about Jeus Ween using that article as a reference in the next few days. It's worth mentioning for how ridiculous it was. But it's definitely not worth having a separate section about Jesus Ween on the Halloween page. It was just a flash in the pan thing from seven years ago. Spud (talk) 12:14, 7 October 2018 (UTC)

About your comment on my CP-related essay

Hi @Spud,

Yesterday I looked on my case in the moderation talk page, and while you and the other mods had some fairly good reasons to not trust me, I found one of your complaints about me rather interesting, and I quote:

I also find the fixation that BadPiggies9 has with Cnservapedia to be slightly troubling, especially the uploading of screencapss of vandalism done to that wiki.

Now, it's one thing to be suspicious of me for doing stupid things with my sysop powers (attempting to protect an article that didn't need protection and attempting to perma-ban another user just for disagreeing with my edits), removing the AFD template from an article (which by the way, was an accident; if you look in the fossil record for that page, you'll find that I later put it back when people started complaining), as well as having a big drama episode last week.

However, it is another thing to be suspicious of me because I happen to be interested in a topic that you have long since moved past, and to be suspicious of me just because of a small, incomplete essay that nobody even reads anyway that is about me trying to make CP more truthful (even if said truthfulness never lasts more than a minute). Temporarily blanking the pages of a wiki that we all hate here does not reflect what I intend to do on a wiki that I love. B'P"9 20:29, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

False statistics on HIV

@RoninMacbeth, @Bongolian, @Cosmikdebris, @GrammarCommie, @Avida Dollars, @Dysklyver

"The proposal to warn both Lankaster and James Earl Cash to stop edit warring, with the knowledge that future action might be taken."

So you voted for it... and here it is James Earl Cash deleting information that I wrote about Nigel Farage telling false statistics on HIV and migrants in a public debate. Will you take action as promised? -Lankaster (talk) 08:51, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

I discussed it with James. I prefer the version that James asked, because you did kind of brush past that. However, I do believe you should readd your information while preserving Jamnes's edits. RoninMacbeth (talk) 17:05, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
@RoninMacbeth That's not what I asked in this thread. James Earl Cash deleted the information I wrote about Farage spreading false statistics on HIV. Will you take action as promised? -Lankaster (talk) 17:47, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
I'm trying to be the bigger person here. This is kinda sorta uncalled for. James Earl Cash (talk) 17:59, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
Yeah this issue seems to have been settled quickly. I feel it's counterproductive to take action right now. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png 🎄LeftyGreenMario!🎄 18:16, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
Quoting out of context — quote mining — is bad, @Lankaster, and you've been caught doing it. As a moderator, I don't appreciate that this spat is being dragged across yet another political page so soon after a coop case. Cut it out. Take some time off to reflect. Edit a non-political page. Bongolian (talk) 18:54, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
@James Earl Cash "I'm trying to be the bigger person here." You are not trying to be the bigger person, I made an edit and your next posts contained "For fuck's sakes", "you decided to add a bunch of shitty euphemisms", "Thanks for proving you're every bit the dumbass", "Yep, definitely a fucking shit for brains", and suggested that my real surname is McLaghing "that's even if McLaghingLankaster" (click)
@LeftyGreenMario "Yeah this issue seems to have been settled quickly." No, this issue required me (again) to write a lot on the talk page, to justify what was a perfectly right edit.
@Bongolian "out of context — quote mining — is bad, Lankaster, and you've been caught doing it." What!? Are you out of your mind? Tell me where I did quote out of context in my edit on Nigel Farage page. "As a moderator, I don't appreciate that this spat is being dragged across yet another political page so soon after a coop case. Cut it out." No, James Earl Cash should stop to delete factual information without reasons; and, as a moderator, you should say so. -Lankaster (talk) 19:33, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
Um, okay. There's a definite communication problem here, or at least that's all I hope it is. Sure I got hostile in the beginning with your edits, but that's because there's no reason to try and take out documented, sourced information that incriminates Farage for being every bit the stereotypical Brexit shithead people think he is and certainly is far too nice to Trump. Aside from the sock accusation, the rest of that was directed at some BoN. So yeah...this is getting a tad out of hand.
I mean I don't expect us to get along anytime soon and I'd prefer it if you just were flat out honestly malicious with me instead of putting on any pretend genial act, but I already explained the last edit I did with Farage on his HIV remarks. I didn't notice that Farage was lying about the HIV stats so I just thought it was more article bloat. That simple. James Earl Cash (talk) 19:44, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
You being hostile is bad. You know that being hostile would just cause the discussion to drag more than it should have. Just stop it with the accusations. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png 🎄LeftyGreenMario!🎄 19:51, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
@James Earl Cash "I didn't notice that Farage was lying about the HIV stats so I just thought it was more article bloat." After I raised a coop case telling you to stop deleting factual information without any reason, you saw that I added the false HIV statistics spread by Farage and the official statistics of the UK government and... you deleted everything because you thought it was "article bloat"? You are admitting that you delete stuff without even reading/understanding it. -Lankaster (talk) 20:11, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
Mistakes happen. Can't say much more than that. We've been over this. I looked over what I deleted again and it just looks like some random quote by him where he attempts to handwave being an asshole. It's not important or at least it reads that way, so if you want to get to the heart of the matter and highlight him being a liar, well feel free. After all, we don't just regurgitate facts or what someone said, we need to go in and say why something is wrong.
And for someone who pretty blatantly wants to pick a fight with me on the pretense of adhering to wiki standards, there was really no reason for you to delete the part where he openly said he wanted to ban all immigrants. James Earl Cash (talk) 20:23, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
@James Earl Cash "there was really no reason for you to delete the part where he openly said he wanted to ban all immigrants." If you mean the sentence "During the Leader's debates, Nigel Farage attracted controversy when he suggested that HIV-positive migrants should not enter the country (a claim which is not supported by the evidence).(ref)Dina Rickman. Nigel Farage could not be more wrong about HIV and immigration, The Independent. May 2015.(/ref)" I replaced it with the quote on Farage false HIV statistics, hence removing the claim that HIV-positive migrants should not enter the country, because the given source (Dina Rickman's article) is indeed a refutation of Farage false HIV statistics, and it does not talk about banning HIV migrants. The sentence about Farage wanting to ban HIV migrants was in the source given after (Nicholas Watt's article), which I did not delete. If you wanted to make clear that, besides spreading false HIV statistics, Farage wants to ban HIV migrants, you could have just replaced the sentence "This is not the first time he has made these comments(ref)" with something like "This is not the first time he has made these comments, indeed in 2014 he called to ban HIV migrants from entering UK(ref)" and I would have been perfectly fine with that. Instead, you just decided to delete what I wrote without thinking twice, as you always do. -Lankaster (talk) 10:12, 20 November 2018 (UTC)

My response was posted in this section. Also, how is this conflict still going on? Have there been further develpments as far as content goes? RoninMacbeth (talk) 19:34, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
I thought this conflict is long resolved. There has been no development aside from edits by me and Lankaster's suggestions. I don't know why Lankaster is dragging this one out to try to get James Earl Cash punished. If he was being far more contentious, it would be a problem, but this is not a problem. Any other mod agrees with me? --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png 🎄LeftyGreenMario!🎄 19:45, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
@RoninMacbeth "My response was posted in this section." I know... I know... and I replied...
@LeftyGreenMario "I thought this conflict is long resolved." The conflict about that specific edit is resolved. The conflict about James keeping reverting my edits without a motivation is still really unsolved. "I don't know why Lankaster is dragging this one out to try to get James Earl Cash punished." Because I'd like to do other edits to RW, but knowing that they will be reverted by James without motivation, no matter how factual and well supported they are, and with all the moderation being apparently OK with that, makes me think that first it should be solved this issue. -Lankaster (talk) 20:04, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
You know what? Let's get this specific issue out of the way. First, I need both @James Earl Cash and @Lankaster to say if they are satisfied with Nigel Farage as it is right now. Second, I need James Earl Cash to understand that, where possible, Lankaster's edits should be expanded upon, not simply reverted. Third, we should at least consider giving Lankaster a mop so he and James are at least on equal footing. RoninMacbeth (talk) 20:21, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, I thought Mario handled the Farage page a long time age to everyone's satisfaction, and her message to me on the Sarsour page definitely got the point across about reverting. Why is this still going on, Lankaster? James Earl Cash (talk) 20:45, 22 November 2018 (UTC)

"First, I need [...] Lankaster to say if they are satisfied with Nigel Farage as it is right now." Yes, I'm fine with the last edit of LeftyGreenMario. My only worry is about my future edits.
@James Earl Cash "her message to me on the Sarsour page definitely got the point across about reverting. Why is this still going on, Lankaster?" Which message? I cannot know what LeftyGreenMario says to you on another page. If a moderator finally told you to stop deleting information without reason, then very good. -Lankaster (talk) 10:23, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
OK, and I understand your concern. Which is why @James Earl Cash should come here to reaffirm that he understands that he should expand off your edits, not revert them. Is this acceptable to you? RoninMacbeth (talk) 16:12, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
"Which is why James Earl Cash should come here to reaffirm that he understands that he should expand off your edits, not revert them. Is this acceptable to you?" Yes, it is. -Lankaster (talk) 18:23, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Really? You can't check the talk page of an article you created? First you wanted me punished over a change that RoninMacbeth approved, and now you're shifting the goalposts to try and get me to publicly kowtow before you. Ain't gonna happen. James Earl Cash (talk) 21:52, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Gods dammit, both of you. Just tell each other you'll either expand on each others' writing, or give a really, really, good reason on the talkpage. If you two see this as kowtowing, then kowtow to each other. RoninMacbeth (talk) 22:32, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Like I said, Mario told me that a long time ago and I got the message loud and clear. As far as the kowtowing part goes, I'm not afraid to publicly express that I doubt the intentions of someone who won a coop case and is starting a non-issue to drag my name through the dirt for whatever reason, but yeah, you won't have any problems from me. James Earl Cash (talk) 23:25, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
@RoninMacbeth "Gods dammit, both of you." Why "both"? The only one here who doesn't want to find some kind of agreement is James, I did. Yep, I'm not going to delete factual information without a reason and without discussing it on the talkpage, no matter who (James Earl Cash included) has written such information.
When James says "Mario told me that a long time ago and I got the message loud and clear" he is lying: according to himself, Mario told that to him on 15 November but on 19 November he deleted what I wrote about Farage HIV statistics, so he did not get the message loud and clear. -Lankaster (talk) 08:51, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Rape of Nanking

I've been doing some light research on it, as an extension of my History of China course. You live in Taiwan, do you know what the government there says about it? RoninMacbeth (talk) 02:46, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

@RoninMacbeth Excellent question. Well, what I can say is that the way in which Japanese aggression and colonial expansion during the 1930s and '40s and Japan in general are viewed is quite different in Taiwan to mainland China. What you have to remember is that Taiwan was ceded to Japan at the end of the Sino-Japanese War in 1895 and official Chinese rule had never really extended over all of Taiwan in the 300 odd years before that anyway. Japanese rule in Taiwan didn't really begin and end with two opposing armies. Instead, it was with the signing of papers, the lowering and raising of flags, the handing over of a sword and salutes on both sides. By the time of the Rape of Nanking, Taiwan had already been under largely peaceful Japanese colonial rule for more than 40 years.
Japanese colonial rule has had a lasting cultural impact on Taiwan. I'm going to go out in a moment and walk past lots of cafés and shops that have the beckoning catWikipedia in the window. Nearly every day, somebody says to me, chotto matte, Japanese for "wait a moment". The relationship between Taiwan and Japan could be likened to that between several other Asian and African countries and Britain or other European colonial powers. The Taiwanese $500 bill represents a youth team from Taiwan that won a national Japanese baseball competition during colonial times. Since baseball was introduced to Taiwan by the Japanese, they effectively beat the Japanese at their own game. However, unlike in other Asian and African countries, I think you'd find a lot more people here who would unashamedly argue that colonialism was very much a good thing, what with the Japanese bringing railways, electric lights, improved health care, sanitation and education to Taiwan. There's certainly no popular anti-Japanese sentiment here, unlike in South Korea. Anime and manga are hugely popular here. Japanese pop music used to be very popular here, although South Korean pop music has now over taken it in popularity. Japan is the second largest source of tourists to Taiwan after Hong Kong. Japanese is the second most widely taught foreign language in Taiwan after English. In the recent past, some Western visitors to Taiwan experienced hostility from people whose families supported Imperial Japan during World War II, but that's extremely unlikely to happen now.
So, I'd say that the different historical relationship between Taiwan and Japan means that the way in which events on the Chinese mainland are viewed here is quite different from how they're viewed in the PRC.
Much more important to the modern nation-making myth in Taiwan today is the overthrowing of Imperial Chinese rule and the rise of the Republic of China in 1911. The national day of Taiwan on October 10 commemorates the founding of the Republic of China. Children are taught at school that Sun Yat-Sen was a hero because he put an end to the system where the emperor had the power of life and death over every one of his subjects. The thing is that, unlike the Japanese and the communist Chinese, there really aren't any supporters of the Chinese emperor around anymore. So the founding myth of your nation can include an enemy that had to be defeated without upsetting anyone, especially not any great economic powers. Spud (talk) 04:51, 9 December 2018 (UTC)

Zionism

Why did you revert my removal of various sentences of manic, unsourced (or sourced to Chomsky and opinion articles), anti-Israel propaganda screed? This is described as "RationalWiki", yet it is apparently composed of irrelevant agitprop about "slaughtering innocents", which is sourced to biased opinion articles, sources which don't describe the events as related to the categories (either Zionism or terrorism), and randomly cherrypicked news stories based on the actions of a single religious mass shooter. The article later on describes Zionism as "ethnic nationalism" based in "blood and soil", and that these two components are comparable to Nazism. Hint: Israel is one of the most multiracial in the world, which you would know if you had ever been there (which is evidently not the case of whoever wrote this article). This site, judging from such articles, appears to be anything but rationalist - but rather a biased, manic platform for one-sided political activists, to write unsourced propaganda to suit their pet hatred of certain countries and races. Please consider the correction of a factually incorrect article about me

Dear Spud, I am writing you because a few weeks ago, an article about me (https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Dalibor_Jur%C3%A1%C5%A1ek) appeared on Rational wiki. This article contains some factually incorrect claims, to which I demanded corrections. I have written on the article Talk page, where I have specified the claims and given my arguments.

However, I was met with being labeled a „liar“, „denialist“, but my arguments were not addressed. I have also contacted the mail legal@rationalwiki.org, but there was no answer (the e-mail box seems to be defunct, as my e-mail was not delivered). As you are an active RationalWiki Moderator/Sysop, I believe you are competent to enter this process and correct the information. I hope we can engage in a fair and open discussion.

PS. I have also contacted the user Nerd.

Thank you and friendly regards, and wish you a Happy New Year --Dalibor.jurasek (talk) 10:04, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

The Holocaust happened. It left millions of people dead, including my relatives. Don't try to play word games to deny your denialism. Spud (talk) 13:52, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your answer, but you did not at all address my arguments. I am not claiming the Holocaust did not happen, I just do not have enough information to consider how some aspects of it happened. I hate playing with words – more so in an age where people label others with opposing views and consider that a legitimate argument. I already explained how the consequences of your logic are contradictory. If sceptic = denier, from that follows that A equals non-A.
More importantly, I addressed other issues, as well, to which you did not respond. The content of the article about me is in violation of your own standards, which state “Articles about living people must be handled carefully“, „we need to firmly back our points“ and „if a claim is not solidly referenced, asserts something about the article's subject(s), and the article's subject(s) might object to it, it probably shouldn't be in the article at all. This is not just for legal protection, but because it's the right thing to do.“ --Dalibor.jurasek (talk) 15:52, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Dalibor.jurasek As far as this wiki is concerned, either:
 • You believe all aspects of the Holocaust happened exactly as the history books say it did. Or;
 • You are a Holocaust denier because you either question or are skeptical about some part of it. Or;
 • You don't think the Holocaust was bad, because you are a NAZI.
That's basically it. — Dysk (contribs) 16:11, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
@Dysklyver That's not true. Deniers pretend the Holocaust never happened, and are composed entirely of cranks. Revisionists want to re-examine the number of deaths reported, either because they're cranks who wish to downplay an atrocity for their own political gain, or because they are historians seeking accurate numbers. This second camp is a bit more complicated. Then of course there are those who try to justify the Holocaust, and are (obviously) cranks. whichever camp Jurasek falls into there can be no denying that the article needs more sources. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 16:28, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Just to put things in context. I actually never published any article regarding whether the Holocaust happened. I never publicly lectured on it or anything. My only public statement regarding revisionism was one discussion post from 2010 (my blog, where the discussion was, was deleted several years ago) where I stated: "I do not have a clear opinion, but rather I tend to favour the revisionists. To say with greater certainty, I would need information I simply do not have. Unfortunately, the likelihood of acquiring them given the present legal state is very low.". From then on, my opinion evolved in that I am fifty:fifty. I know both sides have serious arguments, but also serious questions that need to be answered. What happened to the Jews during second world war, I consider a horrible crime committed by the Nazis. Whether it was 6, 5, 2 or 1 million does not make it less horrible. All of this, of course, needs to be understood in historical context. The Holocaust should not be politicized as much as it is, and other victims should be remembered as well. We need a free discussion of all opinions and sides of view. It is absurd to put into jail someone who simply voices an opinion different from the official version - even if they are utterly wrong.
Since writing my article in 2010, still as a student of law, I have not dealt with the topic of Holocaust. It is not a topic of major interest for me. I thus do not feel obliged to have an exact opinion on it. And I reject being labeled when I do not have a clear opinion. When I have an exact opinion on something, I need to have really clear arguments. It does not suffice to me that something is a mainstream consensus. I need to go deeper to be sure. And that goes for all topics. If I have serious reasons for doubt (which I have in many aspects of the Holocaust), I abstain from a clear opinion. Precise fact-checking usually takes a lot of time and energy, which I invest in topics important for me. There are thus many topics on which I do not have a clear opinion on. I am unlike many other people, who, after reading just one, two articles already have a clear-cut opinion.
According to the logic the author of the article about me used, all true sceptics and all true agnostics are Holocaust deniers. Also, this logic is self-contradictory, as I showed at my talk page.
To sum up:
1. I do not at all deny the Holocaust, I consider it a horrible crime, though I am not sure about how some aspects of it happened.
2. I only stated my opinion on revisionism once, in a discussion post in 2010, to an article which is already deleted for several years. There, I wrote I don't have a clear opinion and I cannot have it because the present legal state makes open and free discussion impossible.
3. I have not dealt with the Holocaust (be it publicly, or personal study) since.
It is ludicrous in this context to lump me in one category with people who are hateful, truly deny the Holocaust and have not event studied the literature extensively. This reminds me of Orwellian newspeak.
Also, your article about me pops up very high in the search of my name. In our society, when one is labeled as an "extremist" or "Holocaust denier", it might be problematic for them to study, find a job or even a living contract. I am aware that my activities (sometimes "politically incorrect") can put me in this position. But I refuse to be in this position as a result of a false accusation, repeatedly proven untrue, only to be labeled as a liar, on a wiki supposedly run by people favoring critical thinking.
Moreover, the article still claims I am a pseudoscience promoter, which has absolutely no basis in fact. Nobody on the discussion has shown any argument for this, despite my repeated requests.
Thank you, and wish you all a happy new year!
Dalibor

I have read the discussion at https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/RationalWiki:Articles_for_deletion/Dalibor_Jur%C3%A1%C5%A1ek. Thank you for listening to my arguments. I was still listed as a Holocaust denier in the article https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Jan_te_Nijenhuis, so I deleted this mention, because most editors voting in the vote were persuaded that I am not one (although I really was, for a time). Esperanto - whats the point?

i mean, i know the purpose of why it was created, but why go through all the pain and tedium ('how do i get to get to the hotel?' i had stab myself with compasses in german classes to stay awake) of learning a new language that doesnt have much in the way of practical use? hobbyist or some grander purpose? AMassiveGay (talk) 17:14, 17 February 2019 (UTC)

@AMassiveGay Well, I'm certainly just a hobbyist now.
I began learning Esperanto when I started university nearly 30 years ago. I was there to study French and Spanish (which I'd learned at school and absolutely loved) and really wanted to learn another language. That was partly because I failed A-level English literature and therefore didn't get into my first choice university where I would have studied French, Spanish and Portuguese. So I would have taken extra classes in any language that was offered. The only such classes I could take were in Esperanto. I hadn't travelled much at that time and I really had no idea just how widely used English was as an international language.
So, given what you've said above, I wouldn't recommend learning Esperanto to you, even though many people who have had difficulty learning languages in the past have found them easier after learning Esperanto. You'd clearly be happier earning a language that you could make use of as quickly as possible. In your case, that might be a language spoken by a minority community in your area, like Greek, Turkish, Urdu or Punjabi.
And in a somewhat convoluted way, it was Esperanto that ultimately brought me to RationalWiki. The first wiki I ever stumbled across was the Esperanto version of Wikipedia. Spud (talk) 05:32, 18 February 2019 (UTC)

Regarding the localisation

How could I start a page like the Russian one please? I couldn't find the entry. — Unsigned, by: Police / talk / contribs

@Police There are a few pages already in Chinese and you can use them for starting points: Category:Chinese. You can find help on creating a page here: Help:New Article ("The easiest way to create the page is to 'search' for the title using 'Go' and click on 'create this page'. (Make sure your title's pretty though.") Making a page in Chinese shouldn't be any different than any other language. Before you save the page, make sure to add this at the bottom of the page, "" so that it gets listed along with the other pages in the Chinese category. If we ever get to having a largish number of pages in Chinese then we'll consider making a domain for them like Russian. Bongolian (talk) 06:47, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
@Bongolian Thanks for the reply, but I still have some uncertain things to figure out. For example, how could I create a translated page for https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Josh_Axe? Could you give me a hand? I find the structure here is quite different from normal Wikipedia website, and I don't want to make a mess here. Police (talk) 08:13, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
@Police I suggest you start by creating a draft like this one. Just type rationalwiki.org/wiki/Draft: followed by whatever Josh Axe's Chinese name is. Then click on "Create" and start writing. You can then take as long as you like to do the translation and it can be moved out of draft space and into main space when you've finished it. Even though I can't read or write Chinese my experience here in general, and my experience creating translations in particular, probably means I will be able to help you a little. Spud (talk) 11:40, 24 April 2019 (UTC)
@Spud Thanks. I have created a draft here: https://rationalwiki.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Josh_Axe_(Simplified_Chinese), but I still find the edit page is quite difficult for translation because it uses so many tags/marks and while sometimes the order of words have to be adjusted. It there a more user-friendly way to edit it in a "preview" mode? Police (talk) 07:48, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
@Police You know, you really should rename that draft so that its title is Josh Axe's Chinese name written in Chinese characters.
I didn't copypaste the English text for any translation I did. I wrote my translation on paper first, a few paragraphs at a time, and then copied those few paragraphs onto the draft page. I usually added the notes and references after I'd completed a section. I found it easier that way. But that's just me.
So to answer your question, no, I don't think there's really any easier way of doing it. Like I said before, take your time. There's no hurry. And maybe you could edit the pages that are already in our Chinese category a little. That might help you get more of a feel for wiki editing. Spud (talk) 11:03, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
And @Police, in response to what you asked me on Discord, it's really already been said. It's really not a good idea to create another separate wiki like the Russian one in Chinese, or any other language, at the moment. After a lot of articles in Chinese are created, then we can consider it. Spud (talk) 11:42, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
@Spud Thanks again for your tips. Speaking of the localisation of his name, I believe it's better to keep his name in English, because many who introduced him to Chinese readers didn't translate his name either. And if I translated his name in Chinese, Chinese readers may have no idea who we describe here. Police (talk) 15:04, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

@Spud A new question please. How could I translate the banner on the right side? Like "Against allopathy Alternative medicine Icon alt med alt.svg Clinically unproven" Police (talk) 07:12, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

@Police OK, I can understand your reason for not transliterating his name. But you should translate the name of the language in parentheses after it. You will see other articles with titles like that in the Chinese category.
So, you're asking about translating the alternative medicine nav template. Again, I don't think that's a good idea just yet. The point of those templates is that point readers towards other articles. And since there aren't any other articles on alternative medicine in Chinese yet, there's nothing to point them towards. However, if you really want a template<, I suggest that you make a request in the Saloon bar. I don't know how to make one. But I'm sure that somebody else could create a template for you with text in English that you could translate into Chinese. But I'd really wait until there are more articles that could go into a Chinese-language alternative medicine category before asking for that. Spud (talk) 11:28, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Christophobia vs Islamophobia comparison

According to you "Be aware that Christophobia and persecution of Christians are not the same thing". How is Christophobia not the same as Islamophobia when they can both lead to the same outcome. What persecution does a Christian have to suffer before it can be termed "Christophobia"? There is a clear double standard between the two articles, so why do you object to those examples I added? BirdWord

"Islamophobia" is a widely used and understood term. "Christophobia" is not. The term "Christophobia" appears to be mainly used by people who have no idea what it means to live in constant fear of your life simply because of your religion. You are doing no favours to people who were murdered because of their religion by lumping them in with a bunch of arseholes whining on the internet about how they are being persecuted by the secular liberals. Spud (talk) 05:59, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
And new threads on a user talk page go at the bottom, not at the top. Spud (talk) 06:04, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining how the threads work on Talk Pages. About the term "Christophobia" if, for example, the survivors of the Sri Lanka Easter Bombings or Christians living in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia started using that term, would their plights? Also, please explain how persecution of Christians isn't Christophobia when Christophobia can lead to those things just like Muslims and Islamophobia. I understand what you're saying about use of the term, but things are changing and the term is starting to gain in usage and these sort of incidents are on the rise; it's less often people with a persecution complex or anti-left-wing paranoia using that term. For example, why didn't the Sutherland Springs Church Shooting count but the Christchurch shooting did? So what examples do you think would be appropriate to add to the Christophobia page? Especially since the Islamophobia page has the courtesy to distinguish between Muslims genuinely suffering for their religious beliefs and people using the term out of paranoia or a political agenda; just please give Christianity the same standards Islam is given. BirdWord (talk) 00:18, 28 April 2019)
Also, why does the article say Christophobia is a real thing if it's a term used by people you claim are conspiracy theorists looking to blame everything on "evil liberals"? If you're going to acknowledge it's a real thing, there should be examples. Besides, even atheists like Richard Dawkins (who, iirc, was once considered a hero by this site) and Sargon of Akkad (in this video with the similar title "Christianophobia", as seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNhC5gq8AQ0&t=1s ) have acknowledged anti-Christian double standards and discrimination are on the rise. BirdWord (talk) 18:53, 19 May 2019)

AD vs CE

When S.H. DeLong wrote the article, he began with the AD method of dating, so I just kept it like that for consistency's sake (and at that point, the dating was the least of our problems). I think we started it like that because a lot of the historiography surrounding Rome and Byzantium uses AD/BC. Just letting you know. RoninMacbeth (talk) 05:48, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

I really think we should always use BCE and CE here. Except, of course, when it's part of a quote, a book title or something like that. On Wikipedia, I have sometimes reluctantly changed BCE and CE to BC and AD for consistency. But I much prefer making the change the other way round. Spud (talk) 05:58, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
I mean, I'm certainly not going to stop you. But I don't seem to remember us having a consistent policy on BC/AD vs. BCE/CE. Perhaps we should make one if we don't? RoninMacbeth (talk) 06:01, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
I think you're right. I don't think we have an official policy about using BCE and CE. Maybe we should. Anyway, for now, every time I see BC and AD used, I will change them. Spud (talk) 06:11, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
BCE/CE is widely considered to be the more secular and religiously-neutral dating system, so I think we should go with that. Considering, y'know, what website we're on. Pizza SLICE.gifDuceMoosoliniYour friendly RW dictator moderator 06:51, 17 May 2019 (UTC)
Exactly! Especially considering that Conservapedia got started after Andy Schlafly was shocked when one of his home-schooled students used BCE/CE and he found out she'dd learned it from Wikipedia. If it wasn't for that nasty secular BCE/CE, there would have been no Conservapedia, and consequently, no RationalWiki either. Spud (talk) 11:47, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

Why does he get to be listed at the top of the sociology category page?

The first line of each article sums up pretty well the foundational value these guys had in the field of sociology. Whether that really warrants special categorization is a more subjective matter, of course. 2A02:1810:4D34:DC00:A522:4425:C33D:25EF (talk) 11:22, 30 July 2019 (UTC)

New Portuguese articles

What do you think of the two new Portuguese articles (9/11 (português) and ‎USA PATRIOT Act (português))? They seem to be close to, but not exact, Google translations. Delete? Bongolian (talk) 17:34, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

@Bongolian
English for DeepL Translator: These articles were translated by an Internet translator and revised by a Brazilian: Me! I don't think it's necessary to write that my native language is Portuguese. Therefore, there is no danger with me!
Português por mim mesmo: Esses artigos foram traduzidos por um tradutor da Internet e revisados por um brasileiro: Eu! Acho que não é necessário escrever que minha língua nativa é o português. Portanto, comigo não há perigo!
JPLSilva (talk) 21:16, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
@Bongolian I have deleted them. The user who posted them has just admitted to them being proofread machine translations. That's exactly the same as the Italian translations that I deleted a little over a year ago. And at least they were posted by people who could speak English and could compare the machine translation to the original. (Although I don't think they did a very good job of that.)
@JPLSilva I'm very sorry, but if you don't speak English, I really don't think you have anything to contribute here. You won't be able to communicate with other users, which is an important part of editing a wiki like this one. And you cannot translate articles if you do not understand the language they are written in. You might think you can correct mistakes in the machine translation. But if you can't understand the original article, you can't compare it to the machine translation. How can you be sure the translation is right? Besides, I feel that relying on machine translations is just lazy. I have done translations here that I have spent days and weeks doing. I don't think it's right that someone else can create a translation with just a few clicks. Spud (talk) 06:44, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
 • Well, I translated it from my English skills, and I turned to Google Translate for help when needed. Be aware that those articles are under construction, which means I didn't abandon them. The links are in red because I always add "Português" to their end, but don't worry, I know what I'm doing.DabUnicorn.png SmalkadeContribsSandboxEC 12:10, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
@Smalkade Since they're unfinished, I have moved your translations to Draft:Apocalipse and Draft:RationalWiki (português). You can move them back to mainspace when you've finished them. Occasionally referring to Google Translate while doing a translation, in the same way that you'd refer to a dictionary or grammar book, is fine. It's relying mostly or entirely on it to create a page that's bad. And can you please do something about your signature? Why does it need to create two big white gaps in the text? Spud (talk) 12:34, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
Man, you should have warned me and JPLSilva in advance that incomplete articles should be created within this namespace. Anyway, thank you for clarifying some doubts. Glad to see RationalWiki's QA is tight, so the articles here are well-written. DabUnicorn.png SmalkadeContribsSandboxEC 13:18, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

English for DeepL Translator: If that were the case, I wouldn't even have created an account on this wiki. I guess I'll have to ask a bureaucrat to delete my account and contributions. I was so excited about the goals of RationalWiki... I warn you, the administrators of this wiki, that this discourages users from all over the world who are really interested in the ideals of RationalWiki, but do not have an advanced knowledge of English. The fact that I have to know your language unfortunately reminds me of Conservapedia.

Estava tão empolgado com os objetivos da RationalWiki... Aviso a vocês, administradores desta wiki, que isso desestimula usuários do mundo todo que realmente estão interessados com os ideais da RationalWiki, mas não tem um conhecimento avançado de inglês. @BluePink Sorry. I don't think I can. I think you might have made the mistake of taking what's written about me in Fun:The truth about Rationalwiki too seriously. I have no particular interest in debunking alternative medicine and promoting real medicine. I really don't no why DuceMoosolini wrote that I did. But, yeah I know that traditional Chinese medicine is utter crap from the stupid "medical" advice my Taiwanese boss has given me. She actually said I had too much blood in me! That's the same kind of nonsense that you'd have heard if you'd gone to see a doctor in England 700 years ago. Spud (talk)

@DuceMoosolini Yeah. I see a few users have been sent the same message. A few of the most capable users, you might say. And I like what you wrote about me in The truth about Rationalwiki because it is so completely and utterly untrue. Which I think was your intention. There's a slight danger that other new users will think I have a special interest in alternative medicine. But I can always just tell them that I don't. Like I just did. I need a favor

I can't read much of any language outside of English, and a supposed alt-right cartoonist (I say supposed because we've had people just post random people there, so background checking their content is important) has their content in either Spanish or Portuguese. Would you mind taking a crack at it and letting me know if they belong on the page? ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 14:33, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

The content is in Spanish. I think he just about qualifies as alt-right. The art style is obviously influenced by online alt-right cartoons. None of the content appears to be racist or antisemitic But the cartoonist is obviously an anti-feminist and I'd say most of the carttons are downright misogynistic. Poor old Mustafa

I don't understand the odd animus some other editors have against Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, but I find it very odd and disturbing that some folks want to impose their tribal orthodoxy about the fellow on other users' user pages. As to the tribal conflict itself, I don't have a position and am wholly indifferent to the underlying opinions.

I would have closed that AFD as no consensus. Policing other users' personal pages ought to be unacceptable. Smerdis of Tlön, wekʷōm teḱs. 17:10, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

Chunichi Shimbun

I want to restore the article

The Chunichi Shimbun is the third major newspaper after the Yomiuri Shimbun and Asahi Shimbun, and has a great influence even though it is a local newspaper. Even if it is said that it is a local newspaper, it is extremely vast and covers everything from Nagoya to Tokyo.

The Chunichi Shimbun (Tokyo Shimbun) is read all over Japan through the Internet.

Nagoya-based newspaper has a highly influential newspaper that owns the professional baseball team Chunichi Dragons (the Yomiuri Giants, which owns the baseball team in other companies in the same industry).

Tokyo Metropolitan Television (TOKYO MX), an independent television station funded by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, is under its umbrella.

It is also one of Japan's leading left-wing media and has been read by many domestic leftists. Politically, he supports the Constitutional Democratic Party and the Social Democratic Party.--Karasawa Takahiro (talk) 11:42, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

@Karasawa Takahiro You had your chance. You should have explained why it should have been kept before it was deleted. But I don't think your argument above would have persuaded anyone. As I've now said many times before, the vast majority of newspapers in the world have a political bias. There's nothing special about that. It's not enough to say "X is a leftist newspaper." You have to demonstrate why it's an influential newspaper or why it's worthy of our attention in some way. Spud (talk) 12:46, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

Thunderclapper (talk) 08:43, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

If you hate politics then why do you have political userboxes, also do you have no sense of humor? Regarding sysop rights, you can be demoted to sysop with no edits at all if someone thinks it's a good idea, there are no minimum requirements and the system is thus based mainly on nepotism. You can of course remove sysop yourself at any time but otherwise you only lose it if you misuse it, which I don't think you will, or become super unpopular with the mob, which isn't something I can account for anyway. — Z 13:55, 5 July 2020 (UTC)

I've gone ahead and set up the template for your page in such a way that it works. It needs newlines and an idea on how and where to archive. First run should be in a few hours. Leave counter as is, that way it won't screw with your existing archive page. Animated language flags

Hi Spud. I think there is a problem with your implementation of the animated language flags. It seems that for short pages, the float:left style is causing the flags to float to the top of the page, away from the text. See: Envenenar o poço and Poisoning the well. Bongolian (talk) 02:25, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

@Bongolian Well, it was me that suggested changing the language link templates to make them smaller. After some discussion in the Saloon Bar, we decided that the new templates should include animated flags. As I recall, it was @DuceMoosolini who redesigned all the existing templates. I think you'd better talk to him. Spud (talk) 10:55, 17 October 2020 (UTC)
Ah, OK. Thanks. Bongolian (talk) 16:57, 17 October 2020 (UTC)

So you're equating people who disapprove of bestiality with people who dislike vegans. No!

I'm actually doing the opposite. I'm equating people who dislike veganism (note - not vegans as people, but the ideology of veganism) with people who should, if logic were of any value to them, dislike opponents of bestiality. Eating meat causes animals a lot more harm than bestiality, so there isn't any logical reason against bestiality given that you think eating meat is okay.

Why don't you think this belongs in the article? Przciąszczłóśćiek (talk) 11:06, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

I don't know what you're intentions are but you're coming across as an apologist for bestiality. If you're just trying to promote veganism, you're not doing the caus any favours. Spud (talk) 11:40, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
How does it matter what my intentions are? I'm not trying to promote anything. I am just including some well-deserved snark aimed at meat-eating hypocrites. There is already a lot of snark aimed at vegan hypocrites, so I just wanted to throw some of it the other way. All of it is 100% deserved and 100% reasonable, as far as I'm concerned, alright you're welcome to change my mind. Otherwise, are you really going to try and censor the project of things that go against your feelings? Przciąszczłóśćiek (talk) 11:52, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
If it means that much to you, which frankly it doesn't to me, then discuss it at Talk:Bestiality, where it looks like a similar discussion briefly took place give years ago. Spud (talk) 12:15, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
Cool, if it doesn't mean that much to you, I'll just restore my edit, okay? Przciąszczłóśćiek (talk) 14:10, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
Actually, hold on, thanks for redirecting me to that talk page discussion, as it seems like pretty much everyone (apart from one person whose main argument seems very similar to one of the most common arguments against homosexuality) agrees that consent cannot possibly be the reason that bestiality is bad. Given that, I think reinstating my edit would be justified regardless of your opinion on it. Przciąszczłóśćiek (talk) 14:31, 24 October 2020 (UTC)
I'm not going to undo your edit again. But somebody else probably will. Spud (talk) 14:35, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

And the dissent-quashing continues ...

You know that you just proved my point, right? I disagree with you, you block me without TPA and call me "homophobe". This is what's wrong with today's politics, we must agree 100% or you're evil. Hopefully when Biden wins we will return to an earlier state of politics where that's no longer true. Oh, and if this were just about vandalism you would have said "Mindless generic vandalism" and left TPA on. 2601:644:300:4740:D0EB:55D5:F8B3:667D (talk) 04:39, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Only homophobes use the phrase "homosexual agenda" nowadays. That's why I blocked you. Spud (talk) 11:02, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
So just to be clear, I was not blocked for vandalism, I was blocked for "homophobia" or having a different point of view. You guys like to think that you're better than Conservapedia, but you're really just like them. 2601:644:300:4740:D0EB:55D5:F8B3:667D (talk) 17:12, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
The view that black people should be enslaved is a "different point of view", and also would not be tolerated. CoryUsar (talk) 17:31, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
Yes, but that view is so extreme, no serious person would hold that view in modern times. On the other hand, many mainstream politicians still oppose same-sex marriage. The same goes for 37% of Americans in 2019. What I am disputing is that simply holding an opposing view is a blockable offense, especially against someone who holds relatively centrist views on other issues. 2601:644:300:4740:D0EB:55D5:F8B3:667D (talk) 17:47, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

Vegan Gains

Dear Spud, my edit to this page was not at all an attempt at whitewashing. It was actually a blanket reversion of the last BON edits which I thought were messy and detracted from the standard of the writing (I thought the article makes its points pretty well already without interrupting the flow with things like "One word - psychopath." and "basically a fucking moron" complete with the red link). Sorry for not labelling my edit as a reversion. I realize that some of the BON edits do have merit, so I'll try again, and be more selective this time. --Butter Melon Cauliflower (talk) 22:08, 14 December 2020 (UTC)

Reason for uploading Jimmy Dore's montage

The reason I made that montage was to draw attention to the fact that Jimmy Dore profited off of war crimes denial when he made several YouTube videos in which he denied that chemical attacks took place in Syria and referred to dead Syrian children as "crisis actors". I won't link those videos here because they are despicable but you can find them on his YouTube channel. Then with the money he made from YouTube and his shows, he bought a 2,815 square feet walled compound for $1.9 million. If you watch his YouTube videos and follow him on social media like I do, you will notice that he likes to lecture others about "integrity" when he has none. Do you understand that his behavior is morally indefensible? GriftExposer (talk) 07:56, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Yep. And the image had exactly the same effect as anti-abortion billboards showing dead fetuses: it doesn’t affect my opinion on abortion but it does convince me that the people who put up the signs are thoughtless assholes. 2600:100E:B023:5AD1:44A4:2DD6:3880:AB2C (talk) 08:02, 16 December 2020 (UTC)
The BoN is absolutely right. And even if he had personally killed those children, that would be no reason to show photos of their dead bodies here. This is not a shock site. This is not a troll site. Making use of a photo of dead children in that way is utterly despicable. Spud (talk) 12:13, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Doesn't have to do with disagreeing, the sock had engaged in vandalism and anti-Semitism spamming while vandalizing. @Sirius No apology needed. Although I do think you were wrong to tell me not to editorialize. I wrote it that way because it was a bad news story. And bad news stories always get downvoted, no matter how missional they are, unless you make it clear in the WIGO that you think it's a bad news story too. But it doesn't matter now. Yeah accidental rollbacks happen. I've done it several times. Nothing to get excited over Mercian. Knight CommanderIn ServiceTo HerGoatness 18:19, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
Over the last few days Christopher has reverted more than one of my edits including on my talk page which I thought to be sacrosanct which is why I feel this revert was a little more than coincidence.--Mercian (talk) 18:30, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
You’re being paranoid. Did I do this a few minutes before to cover my tracks? What could I possibly gain from one of your edits being reverted for less than a minute? I reverted one instance of talkpage blanking (which you’re not allowed to do even if it is your own page, see RW:CS#Talk pages), and I’m pretty certain that’s it. I’m guessing you’re still annoyed at me over the incident a few days ago where you incorrectly assumed I’d protected your talk page. Christopher (talk) 18:36, 30 March 2021 (UTC)
Small correction: I undid one other instance of removing talkpage content, this time from my own talkpage, during the page protection confusion. @Mercian Rockford the Roe is right. Since you're not a moderator or a member of the Board of Trustees and you don't even edit mainspace articles very often, I don't see any harm in you permanently semi-protecting your talk page so that only autoconfirmed users can edit it. It isn't as if many BoNs, new users or anybody else really will ever desperately need to contact you. It does mean that the problem will probably just move somewhere else. But at least it won't be your problem anymore.
I've semi-protected my talk ;page because I don't want that arsehole bothering me until after my late sister's birthday. The protection will expire on 6 May and I won't protect it again, at least not for a while. I expect to get more crap from Ken after that. I'm never going to respond to it ever again, I'm not going to read it. I'm not even going to look at it. But I'm not going to remove it either. I'm going to hide it and ignore it. @GeeJayK I don't care. I was a post-Conservapedia user until LT showed up here, followed by Ken as GiuocoPiano and then Sievert81 (who did turn out to be harmless). I don't see any reason why I can't now go back to being a post-Conservapedia user again. I'm going to avoid anything to do with Conservapedia and Ken's stupid essay as much as I possibly can. But I'll say this now. I don't see how Ken can claim that Conservapedia doesn't have a "What's going on at RationalWiki" page when that's what all of the so called essays he's edited in the past month have been in all but name. HardWork.jpg Tireless Worker Award
To Spud for protecting RW from account creation spam and harassment when no one else could.

Unrelated, but since I'm already here. Can you please answer my question here? GeeJayK (talk) 02:16, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

@GeeJayK Thank you for the award. It's much appreciated.
To answer your question, I also believe UShistoryanalyzer's primary reason for coming here was to be disruptive. Not to be disruptive just for the sake of being disruptive but to push a political viewpoint that he knew was the opposite of that of most RW editors and he knew would lead to conflict. OK, he has abided by the topic ban, although he tried to evade it at first by still writing on talk pages and writing about American history and politics on other users' talk pages, but I'm not aware of him making any worthwhile contributions anywhere else on the wiki. He has recently taken to writing very poor quality entries on the WIGO CP talk page about things happening on Conservapedia that aren't worth paying attention to and just make us look pathetic by paying attention to them.
As you are yourself, GeeJayK, I am concerned by UShistoryanalyzer's close relationship to LT. I am particularly concerned by his constant insistence that LT is somehow better than the other Conservapedia editors. He isn't. If he had any decency, he would stop editing Conservapedia. And he's now trying to follow in Ken's footsteps by creating multiple socks to troll us over here.
But this does seem to be pretty much irrelevant now. UShistoryanalyzer has made multiple edits today but hasn't responded to your post. I guess he doesn't want to be sysop too. Spud (talk) 06:55, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
Hum, I see your point. I have more important things to do, like taking care of my wedding, so don't expect me to do anything for the next few weeks as I won't be able to come here for more than a few minutes a day. But most of his edits over the last month were in fact reverting vandalism, which we all have to agree it's productive. In my opinion the main problem is the grudge with Flandres and Plutocow. He answered on is talk page, saying that he agrees with the conditions, maybe we could ask him to not revert their stuff, kinda like an informal iban, that won't automatically result in a block. This could happen even without a demotion, maybe. I'll think about your points when I have time. Thanks again for your answer. GeeJayK (talk) 16:06, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

You sound a lot like one user I interacted who also said they were leaving this site at the slightest irritation (also deemed the interaction as "hassling") and is repeatedly announcing to leave the site. But, we'll see. Stay out of trouble. It's nothing personal, we just have a bit of a rereg problem around here so just edit articles with effort, share your political beliefs, etc, and you'll be good. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png 🎄LeftyGreenMario!🎄 06:44, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
Either Andrew5 is an irritating wikicop who made a rude, false and ridiculous accusation against a new user or he isn't? Since Andrew5 did commit this offense, he should face consequences or he will keep engaging in this type of behavior. He may even do this with me. Already, he said I may have committed a "crime". As far as sharing my political beliefs before I will be considered "good", frankly this is inquisitorial thought policing. It is Kafkaesque and Owellian.
This is the most bizarre thing I have encountered since I have been on the internet. And the former admin Andrew5 and present moderation team should be ashamed of themselves. If you keep up your present inquisitorial system that favors a former administrator like Andrew5, you are going to erode your userbase quickly. Granger340 (talk) 11:23, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
If you're trying to play the good faith martyr, maybe don't make a duplicate account to do so. Also don't concern troll about our 'user base'. You've made yourself look like a pillock. Queexchthonic murmurings
Kafkaesque and Orwellian? Those are pretty strong adjectives to use regarding a user being obnoxious on a website. Granger, consider just contributing here and adapting to the environment and understanding that this will blow over and Andrew's wikicoping will eventually be resolved, or find one of the many other websites that are more suitable to your tastes. As right as you may be, I don't think any organisation or group are extremely receptive to a new member who hasn't done much telling people how to do things better and threatening to leave if they don't immediately change. I know I am right. And I am not going to support a Kafkaesque and Orwellian website by contributing content to it. And if a website's moderator/administrator team is not receptive to a new member making a legitimate complaint, that is their problem and not mine. Granger340 (talk) 11:55, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
Ok, bye. Queexchthonic murmurings 12:22, 11 January 2022 (UTC)
I hope you find your ideal website, ShabiDOO 12:38, 11 January 2022 (UTC)

Ideal website? That is a false dilemma. If I choose not to edit further at a website that treats me badly that must mean I am seeking the ideal website. You guys are acting like it's the early days of the internet and there are not a ton of other decent places to contribute. Keep dreaming. Goodbye and good riddance.
