What's your favorite console?

I'm just going to guess it's the Nintendo Switch? Public School Girl (talk) 17:58, 6 May 2019 (UTC)

Nah, I'm pretty sure it's the Sega Genesis. Because the GENESIS DOES WHAT NINTENDON'T. Pizza SLICE.gifDuceMoosoliniYour friendly RW dictator moderator 19:32, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Well the GameCube has a really nice library of games. Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Party 4, Mario Party 5, Mario Party 6, Mario Party 7, Mario Superstar Baseball, Mario Strikers, DDR: Mario Mix, SSX On Tour, NBA Street V3, Luigi's Mansion, and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Oh, and there the critically overrated Paper Mario and the rightfully maligned Super Mario Sunshine. But there's no other console that has this many Mario games in one spot. Game Cube has a nice controller too, but with crappy shoulder buttons and D pad. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 19:40, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
Hold up, you don't like the Paper Mario series? Pizza SLICE.gifDuceMoosoliniYour friendly RW dictator moderator 23:59, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
I haven't played a Paper Mario game, but I think Thousand-Year Door is overrated and has some stupid gameplay changes from the first one I don't like. I know this since my sister played it. I honestly should play first Paper Mario, though, and it's weird I don't play it since Mario's my favorite character. I also didn't play the Mario & Luigi games outside of Dream Team (though never finished Dream Team) even though it stars both my favorite characters. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 00:12, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
You should try Bowser's Inside Story and Superstar Saga from the M&L series. Those are two of my absolute favorite Mario games. Also, Super Paper Mario has a special place in my heart. Pizza SLICE.gifDuceMoosoliniYour friendly RW dictator moderator 00:26, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
Bowser's Inside Story, I'm not terribly interested in but it might not be as cluttered with tutorials that Dream Team is. I know I played a little of Superstar Saga but never to any serious extend. Not interested in Super Paper Mario, that game is really divisive in the Mario fanbase, you know that? I just know it has boring gameplay and I... don't buy the story either. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 01:10, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
Dream Team really doesn't display the best of the Mario & Luigi series. Trust me, the other two are much better. Also, Supra Pap Mayro gets a ton of nostalgia points from me, which is probably why I rank it so highly. Pizza SLICE.gifDuceMoosoliniYour friendly RW dictator moderator 01:12, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
I'm sure Superstar Saga is better than Dream Team, as it's not saddled with tutorials and hand-holding. It looks uglier though. I also don't remember Bros. Moves being fun to use but again, I was like 10 or something and I'm probably overexaggerating what they are great for. I just need to find motivation to play and sustain playing it. I did play Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance recently and while I enjoyed it, it's hard to me to sustain attention on it, probably because some levels were missing Dragon Coins, which I've replayed several times looking for all five Dragon Coins in one run, and I don't know if I should keep looking or just hit some switches and backtrack (ugh) and that sort of thing drives me crazy. My nostalgia games would be Dario Dart: Mubble Cash, Mario Power Pennis, Buper Bash Sros Seele, and the Pario Marties. I do love Super Mario 64 DS, Muper Sario Malaxy, Super Mario 3D Terraqueous Macrocosm, and Super Mario Odd Cs though. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 01:19, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
Love me some Mayro Kratt, Galaxy, and 64DS. And Super Mario World on the GBA was my first ever real video game. I never got a Switch or WiiU, though, so I'm behind on the newer stuff. Pizza SLICE.gifDuceMoosoliniYour friendly RW dictator moderator 01:34, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
Nice, it's a great game. I like it more than the original SNES one because Mario makes noises (and Mario doesn't make noises in the games until some Mario edutainment game in 1995 called Mario's FUNdamentals MarioWiki that predates Super Mario 64 by a year, and that's if you don't count the infamous 1994 Hotel Mario (that uses a fake voice actor who doesn't sound anything like Mario) or a Mario pinball machine MarioWiki that predates Mario's FUNdamentals. In short of Mario being outed as a sexual predator in the heels of #MeToo, I think I'll be a Mario fan-for-life. Oh my god I sound like a nerd.
Anyway you should try some Switch games like Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Mario Maker 2 is upcoming (though I'm not disgustingly interested in it). There's also Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with just over a whopping 70 playable characters and an unbelievable 103 stages (which are very unique from each other). Mayro Kratt 8 is really good, you should play it if u wuv Mario and friends kart racing. That is, if you can stand the roster having 4 Marios (Mario, Baby Mario, Metal Mario, Tanooki Mario), 4 Peachs (Peach, Baby Peach, Pink Gold Peach, Cat Peach), 2 Luigis (Luigi, Baby Luigi), 2 Daisies (Daisy, Baby Daisy), 2 Rosalinas (Rosalina, Baby Rosalina), 2 Bowsers (Bowser, Dry Bowser), and the seven Koopalings. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 01:54, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

Lol, Batman and Superwoman, just when I thought Inklings were pushing the nonMario character promotions a little too far. Also, I have no idea if the person quoted was referring to an actual console, the Wii, which was literally two generations ago; the Wii U, the last generation console; or the Switch, just as how there are old geezers who call any portable gaming device a "Gameboy" or any nongamer that call any sort of gaming device a "Nintendo". --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 23:51, 22 May 2019 (UTC)

Pedants...

...get forced to read grammatically incorrect writing for ten hours as punishment for their pedantry. β€” Oxyaena Harass 17:20, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

I think I've already read grammatically incorrect writing for ten hours, just not all in one sitting. All the "it's" errors, all the "you're" errors, all the spliced commas, all the singular theys, all the misplaced modifiers, all the semicolons ending incomplete clauses, all the colons ending after incomplete clauses, and so on... --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 17:24, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
The singular "they" is not grammatically incorrect. Languages also change regardless of the prescriptivist's screechings. β€” Oxyaena Harass 17:27, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
I hear the "languages change" a lot. Sure, languages change, but readers generally like to see the writing as their parents did. This is also not an excuse to write poorly and to ignore the lines between formal and informal writing (I consider the singular they to be "informal", far from a perfect solution, and that problems with pronouns can, many times, be resolved through rewriting the sentence or changing the subject to plural). Appropriate grammar isn't just for the sake of "the rules", it's to keep everything clear, concise, and easy to read, and in the mean time, the author has to consider the linguistic context of their readers. This makes prescription and description complement despite being apparent opposites. Anyhow, I'm not the type that'll get bothered between "fewer than" and "less than" and I'm not a purist type, I just have to accept whatever is being widespread. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 18:02, 26 June 2019 (UTC)

Nutpicking

I can honestly say I made changes in good faith, in order to neutralize the tone and take away clear bias. Can you say the same? My changes affected both sides. Why then would you repeatedly revert, and in your words "reinsert bias", then protecting the page? Please read and be constructive, rather than ignore and act protective. — Unsigned, by: 207.223.116.154 / talk

Making changes in good faith is part of the thing. The other thing you're responsible for before making such a large edit is to review our Newcomer's guide. This will inform you about the nature of the wiki, that we adopt a point of view based on evidence and good reasoning and do not mince words if certain ideas do not hold up to scrutiny (such as the Tea Party movement and the TERFs). Another thing is that note that someone who undid your edit translates to that user finding the edit highly problematic. Simply undoing that revert leads to edit warring, which is highly frowned on in the wiki. Instead, you should contact the user and try to engage, and levy specific accusations of the content. The amount of bad-faith criticism of "it's biased" and "it's irrational" and "it's written in a POV I don't like" and criticisms levied at the simple name of the wiki is numerous and ongoing. We get that sort of criticism even for the clear-cut issues like homeopathy and flat earth. We also get similar edits like yours that remove large swaths of content in the name of "neutralizing" articles for all sorts of subjects too. Thus, it is impossible to tell from better-faith accusations of it, keep this in mind, thus making it more important to be specific with the accusations. You were specific with one accusation, being the "teabagger equating to slur". I believe it is an epithet but it does not carry quite the same connotations for other common slurs (for instance, the Tea Party movement is attacked for its exploitative dangerous beliefs and goals). The removal of TERF is not justified by anything either, which led to ikanreed assuming that you referred to "TERF" as a slur. Overall, your edits and justification didn't really support the content being removed, and so it's reverted. False and inaccurate accusations of "vandalism", which the accusations were referring to disagreeable content rather than bad-faith defacement of articles, also won't fly in the wiki. Don't do it again. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 22:09, 8 July 2019 (UTC)

Just thought I would let you know that I thought the snark you added, then removed, in the Media Bias/Fact Check article was fair. They appear to give a default factual rating of high to a source unless it has failed a fact check. Here's a direct quote from their website which supports my view (and your snark): Although they sometimes publish controversial information regarding feminism and racism, they have not failed a fact, therefore we rate them High for factual reporting. This is clearly a flawed and irresponsible system since obscure websites don't always get fact checked. And it's not just Quillette, websites that deny the Tiananmen Square Massacre are also rated high for factual reporting. CowHouse (talk) 07:08, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

Well, we should readd the snark but also add a new section that criticizes this site's tendency to rely on other fact checks for its rating that leads to misleading default rating of "high", and examples are Quillette and the aforementioned denial site. Just don't want to have snark all alone. But thanks for that! --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 17:46, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

"Reasonable"

Don't tell me what's reasonable. It's not unreasonable to what to walk anywhere outside your own home without being constantly on watch for some nutjob ready to kill people for some objectively trivial thing. It's not unreasonable to expect lawmakers to protect their citizens, even from said citizens' own stupidity. What is unreasonable is the fetishization of an object whose sole purpose, from its invention to the modern day, is to kill and maim living things. It is not unreasonable to expect people to give up their luxuries if said luxuries are a threat to society at large. So don't lecture me on what's reasonable and what isn't. Guns are for killing. And killing. And kill. Over and over. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 23:12, 8 August 2019 (UTC)

I hate guns a lot too, I share my complete resentment with them. But I can't say the BoN you're arguing with is anything more than a moderate on the issue. I can't say for sure or not if the user is dishonest or not, but I still have my benefit of doubt and I think civility will be more productive to conversation and help us advance our points. There is a difference between bending backward for civility and being civil so others don't react defensively and others can actually focus on your points. This assumes intellectual honesty, which hasn't been exhausted yet. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 00:01, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

Complex life didn't arrive by chance

Hiya mate - hey I just wanted to discuss this claim of yours a bit more. This was on the talk page of the "improbably things happen all the time" article. And yeah, I didn't think a discussion on evolution was appropriate on that page.

By this I assume you mean that the evolutionary theory of natural selection is a system and not just some roll of the dice. Environments change for example, traits that are more suitable are kept or even developed when members of that group with traits that are not helpful die. I get all that. Its a system. But I think a problem you may have is that the system depends on chance still? Without getting into meaningless discussions like "is anything really random" - even things like the environment changing or influences that drive natural selection are pretty much chance? And the mutations or other mechanisms of trait development (most of which will be thrown out as not beneficial according to the theory) are based on chance?

So can you really say complex life didn't arrive by chance then?

Paul

I think technically, evolution needs degrees of chance to start. You can't have evolution without life starting somewhere, which probably requires chance, and how our species arrived communicating here historically has a myriad of factors of chance such as life surviving asteroid collisions, freak volcanic eruptions, our mothers not miscarrying, beneficial chance mutations, wars and diseases not destroying our ancestors, and so on. But as a system, yes, evolution isn't driven by chance, it's just a mechanism. It can be hugely affected by chance, just that chance just isn't, like, a core mechanic. I think it's not wholly correct to argue that complex life arrived by chance or not, it's more of natural selection + a taste of chance, a combination. For all intents and purpose, though, some caveats have to be cleared so I can focus on my main point: that creationists thinking that complex life is improbable; therefore, evolution can't have happened and we respond with "improbable things happen". Possible issues with Handroid7

I know you've used the approach of charity so far with this user, and I try to assume good faith myself, but something may need to be said or done in light of certain edits that do not appear entirely to further the RatWiki mission. I just removed their edits from the fat acceptance page. we can not be on board with all that goes on under fat acceptance but we don't need the fat shaming nor the cataloguing of irrelevant situations. I also removed an edit from the circumcision page by this user. they might merit a quite word. AMassiveGay (talk) 00:25, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
Oh, I did not realize it was inappropriate. I thought that this sarcastic tone was appropriate here, and I thought I'd just document an example for a behaviour of a fat-acceptance, and that case actually got a lot of news attention. β€œapproach of charity” – Does that mean that it was just reluctant acting and not authentic niceness?  β€“– Handroid7  【talk】 01:05, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
@Handroid7 I am not a moderator, and therefore it is not my place to have such discussions with you. Charity is another way of expressing the good-faith assumption in the Conduct portion of the Community Standards. I am afraid I do not entirely understand your last question. CogitoNotStirred (via telepathy) (talk) 01:34, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
I don't really like the language you attempted either since it's not relevant to the fat acceptance movement and it appropriates the language by the fat acceptance movenet to make it seem like we're fat shaming.
I also don't think your edit on circumcision adds to the article either nor is it in spirit with rationality. Common sense actually is a poor way of reasoning since it doesn't rely on logic and evidence to make conclusions, just intuition which logic sometimes exposes as seriously flawed.
And finally, no, this doesn't mean it was "reluctant acting". I'm genuine in my respect and benefit of doubt but we're an open wiki where too many people have tried to exploit goodwill to incite or waste time so don't take it personally if we haven't exactly established trust yet; earning trust takes time and effort. Your edits may have raised a few eyebrows but as long as the parties that revert your edits are being respectful and reasonable while you also try to present your case with respect and goodfaith, you'll be fine. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 01:37, 17 October 2019 (UTC)

I think we should adopt more of a "show don't tell approach" to these sorts of things. GrammarCommie tried collapsing the thing and then that turned into an edit war, and GrammarCommie did warn that user that something will happen for one hour. Gamergate Timeline

After checking wikipedia a few months ago, I saw this. It seems that Pitts got into a twitter argument with Zoe Quinn about an old Gamergate article back in February and shortly afterwards left The Escapist. And in July, Nick Calandra (Managing Director of Video) took his place.

Shouldn't this be mentioned on the timeline? Also, what's with people accusing Quinn of having to have cheated on Gjoni?

A personal note

Although I was aware that some anti-progressives giggle at the use of that word, still I had thought of it as a fairly neutral, almost technical term for a certain kind of language or topic-related reaction (over reaction?). In general, anyone who objects to particular words should be given consideration. But I don't think making people uncomfortable is a good idea for productive conversation.Ariel31459 (talk) 16:25, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

"Trigger" isn't that, I'm afraid. It refers to a stimulus or stimuli that causes a person to recall a traumatic event and physically puts them in a level of stress and anxiety as if they're reexperiencing the event. For instance, the act of people raising their voices in argument, even in a movie, makes me feel more fighty or flighty and disturbed because I've experienced an abusive parent. The "anti-PC" love to throw it around to offend and diminish that experience so I just want you to keep in mind about vulnerable people these "anti-PC" people are harming. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 18:22, 9 November 2019 (UTC)

What am I missing?

I can be wrong - and sometimes am. But why are we infinitely banning people on suspicion of ban evasion? What am I missing? AceMcWicked 02:12, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

What level of suspicion are you objecting to? I think that people have been permabanned for suspicion of ban evasion since as long as I've been here (2014). As I've said before, I think that the idea of permanent bans is a misnomer. If someone wants to come back after a permaban and not repeat their previous pattern of bad behavior, they're not likely to get rebanned. Bongolian (talk) 02:25, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
You can identify a pattern of editing by a user we've banned long ago via Chicken Coop decided from a post in All things in moderation. This user has been reregging constantly under several accounts to stir the pot. I identify this user with the combination of following elements: bland, generic username/minimal userpage. Registers to post immediately accusations of users being socks of mikemikev or ABD (the former accusing Tokyo of being a mikemikev being a complete dead giveaway; this user has accused Spud of being a mike sock in RationalWikiWiki according to Spud in the Chicken Coop link). While not this time, but this user is usually involved with hereditarianism drama (generally name-dropping Emil Kirkegaard/ABD/mikemikev/Noah Carl/Nathan Cofnas) and drags drama here by name-dropping (redacted), EK (in this case has smeared EK again), and Dyskelver. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 02:31, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
I'm trying to be a dick to either of you - I am just always slightly confused when I see a ban for block evasion when we don't possess Checkuser. Also I have never liked the idea of infinite bans. AceMcWicked 05:28, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
There was a discussion about implementing checkuser a while ago, and the majority was against it. I don't remember the argument against it, but there seemed to be a longstanding opposition to it, predating my time here. Bongolian (talk) 06:18, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Obviously I meant "I'm not trying to be a dick to either of you" but that said - checkuser should never be used here. Part of RW's founding ethos was anonymity so I think we should do our best to keep it that way. And the reason I query these blocks is because it is very easy to just block for the reason "ban evasion" and as questions later. Something that has bothered me for some time. AceMcWicked 06:44, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
So, are you thinking of proposing something? I suppose we could try to require people to explain their block-evasion bans, but if we do that thoroughly, it would tend to tip off the blockee as to how to evade better. Bongolian (talk) 06:53, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
To be honest - it is what I have said every time....Don't feed the troll. The people that have ended up being blocked indefinitely have usually done nothing wrong except being suspected socks. A block for 3 days is usually enough. Just leave the trolls alone - use the collapse template. Seriously, this sites trolling problem is nothing compared to what it was 8 - 9 years ago. AceMcWicked 07:06, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
Oh lol I took the "I'm trying to be a dick to you" as entirely facetious and typical Ace being Ace. Abrasive, or should I say, "abr-ace-ive". None taken. Anyhow, edit summaries can kinda suck since there's no way I can really write a paragraph justifying my reasons for ban evading and it can be hard to trace the date of the block to the date where I justify in detail, but I don't mind justifying it just as long as you're being reasonable. Oh, and I just want to say, the lack of CheckUser was useful that one time (from the last RMF meeting) that authorities from New Zealand asked us for particular information and we had to turn up zero because we don't have that information, and I'm sure it has to do with us not having CheckUser. David Gerard can probably fill in anything I missed but that's the gist of it. But a tangible positive consequence should help convince people that the lack of CheckUser got us off pretty good.
(EC): I mean Ass Cello's (because I can't spell "Aeschylus" while that nickname has been used over "Oliver Smith") entire gimmick revolves around repeating these patterns (which got him blocked in the first place). He does try to mix things up by pretending he's another person, but any time he engages in that gimmick he'll get knocked. If he doesn't engage in the gimmick, might as well be a different person. They're obssessive. Those socks can try operating as a different person entirely, and that'll take a ton of effort making at least unique userpages and meaningful conversations and mainspace edits, but as long as they behave, they'll be fine or they'll screw up in another way (and we'll win anyway since they contribute something positive). --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 07:02, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

Human judgement exists, Ace, you should try it sometime. β€” Oxyaena Harass 13:24, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

Yellow Fever

I don't know American subculture well, so it would be nice if you could help me.--BluePink (talk) 11:13, 23 November 2019 (UTC)

Sure. The stereotype of east Asians in the United States shows them as conforming, passive, subservient, overly modest (like women covering their mouths when they laugh), strongly tied to their families, being bad drivers (honestly everyone is bad as the other but I do have negative impressions more on young men that drive flashy cars) and "they all look the same" (never mind I think I can tell Chinese from Korean better I can from the "white" ethnicity and I can tell Chinese from Korean if they talk though determining nationality/ethnicity is always tricky to me). Of course, there's a grain of truth to it like the Chinese do care a lot about the family and respect the elderly but imo some stereotypes surprise me like Asian women having "silky hair". --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 00:52, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
I've always considered rednecks with those giant trucks to be the worst drivers. It goes double for the ones with truck nuts. Pizza SLICE.gifChef Moosolini’s Ristorante ItalianoMake a Reservation 02:06, 25 November 2019 (UTC)
Oh yeah, I tend to give them a very wide berth. If you advertise yourself with reckless disregard with goddamn truck nuts, I'm going to treat you as a person with reckless disregard in general. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 23:03, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Checkuser

Hey man, Oxy has admitted using his tech powers to run checkuser. I thought that was a big no-no here and the mob had frequently voted it not to be used. This is concerning. AceModerator 01:36, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

I have no clue how to run it, Emblyn does. What's concerning is that you're willing to have a dialog with a known cyberharasser and stalker with a fetish for murdering cheerleaders. β€” Oxyaena Harass 01:37, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Wait, you can't "run" checkuser if checkuser isn't even installed. I've used checkuser on another wiki before, this one simply doesn't have it... --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 01:39, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Oxy admitted it though? So is it being used or not? AceModerator 01:40, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
Oxy said it's exaggerated. But either way, you *can't* use it because it's a MediaWiki function that's not installed on this wiki. But if there's a way to mine IP addresses from a user, then that's another thing all together. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 01:42, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
That doesn't explain the screenshot Em sent me. β€” Oxyaena Harass 01:43, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
So Oxy, just made it up to "exaggerate"? That doesn't fill me with any confidence. AceModerator 01:45, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Relaxing song

Haha I love it. I was listening to it a few times already and I'm dying. I put it in my phone so I can hear it in my car. Tbh I think I like the energy by Toad more than the lady in the original song. This song's also stuck in my head sometimes, lol. --It's-a me, Lgm sigpic.png πŸŽ„LeftyGreenMario!πŸŽ„ 23:30, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
