An appeal to identity asserts that the soundness of an argument stands or falls based on the identity of the arguer. In particular, this identity is often a racial, gender, or sexual identity.

In this sense, the appeal to identity is closely related to the genetic fallacy, poisoning the well, tokenism and the ad hominem fallacy.
