Flag of Morocco

The Kingdom of Morocco is a country in North Africa which borders Algeria and Spanish Ceuta and Melilla. The country is primarily composed of Moroccan Arabs with significant indigenous Berber minority groups. Morocco has a high standard of living and modernization. If you do not consider the Western Sahara region as part of Morocco, the country has a land area comparable to the US State of California. Now if you do consider Western Sahara as part of Morocco then it is bigger than California; the Western Sahara Dispute is a bit of a sore spot in international politics. [1] The official languages of Morocco are Modern Standard Arabic and Berber languages; French is the lingua franca of economics, culture, commerce, medicine, and sciences. The same applies for much of the government. [2]

History[edit]

Morocco changed hands several times throughout history. First, it was ruled by the native Berber tribes before eventually being subdued by the Carthaginian Empire. After Rome destroyed Carthage, it conquered and absorbed it into the Empire. Eventually, the Muslims conquered the territory and subdued it into the Caliphate, where conversion to Islam changed the religious makeup of the territory forever.

Early History[edit]

In the year 702 CE the very first incarnation of Morocco was Umayyad Caliphate. This one of severe states in the region at this period of time. By 1056 CE, a Berber kingdom known as the Almoravid Dynasty took control of the region. For 500 years there was several Berber kingdoms that controlled Morocco. North Africa, Spain, and Portugal were controlled by the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties. By 1238, Morocco lost control of these regions. [3]
